Route 68 (Baltimore)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article describes a bus line of the Maryland Transit Administration. Information provided here is derived from old schedules and other archived resources.

The no. 68 line is a bus line operated by the Maryland Transit Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. It currently runs from Walbrook Junction (the intersection of North Avenue, Hilton Street, and Garrison Boulevard) in West Baltimore to the Windsor Hills community, providing shuttle service consistently every 30 minutes at all times.

[edit] History

The no. 68 line was never intended to be permanent. It started operating in 2003 as a temporary shuttle service while a bridge on Forest Park Avenue over the Gwynns Falls was being repaired. Its route was designed to cover a portion of the No. 15 Line, which would be diverted to Windsor Mill Road during these repairs.

At first, the line operated every 40 minutes between Walbrook Junction and the Bernard Mason Apartments in Dickeyville.

In 2005, as part of a comprehensive overhaul plan known as Greater Baltimore Bus Initiative(GBBI), MTA announced that the no. 68 line would no longer operate along its current route. Instead, it would become a more lengthy route between Security Square Mall and the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station, which would replace a portion of the no. 15 line, which was slated to be modified.

Due to public outcry, this change to the no. 68 line has not been made at all. Protests included a 73-year-old man who complained that removing bus service from Forest Park Avenue and being forced to walk a greater distance to reach the nearest line could be life-threatening. There have been no other changes planned to the nos. 15 or 68 lines ever since, and the 2005 plan appears in MTA literature to have been scrapped.

However, in 2005, when the bridge actually closed, the route of the no. 68 line was shortened to the point of the bridge in Windsor Hills, and the line's intervals were improved to one bus every 30 minutes.
