Route 1 (Baltimore)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Route 1 is a bus route in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It currently runs from Sinai Hospital or the Mondawmin Metro Subway station to Ft. McHenry, and is operated by the Maryland Transit Administration. The bus route is the successor to the Carey Street, Fort Avenue, and Gilmor Street (or Fulton Avenue) streetcar lines.

[edit] History

Route 1 was electrified in 1895 between Fulton Avenue in Northwest Baltimore and downtown. In 1959, when the line was converted from a streetcar to a bus, the route was combined with parts of others, and it operated from Druid Hill Park to Ft. McHenry.

In 1982, selected hourly weekday trips were extended from Druid Hill Park to Sinai Hospital. In 1993, all midday trips were rerouted to Sinai Hospital, and all other trips extended from Druid Hill Park to the Mondawmin Metro Subway Station.

Later in 2007, it is proposed that all trips will be extended to Sinai Hospital, providing night and weekend service along Greenspring Avenue.
