Roundwood Park School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roundwood Park School is a secondary school situated in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, UK. Built in 1956, the school just celebrated its golden jubilee. It is a state-run school for boys and girls aged 11-18. It currently has around 1200 pupils, most of whom live in the local area.

Roundwood Park is a 'Mathematics and Computing Specialist School'. It runs a full curriculum, including all standard subjects as well as vocational subjects for Sixth Form students. The current Headmaster is Mr. Nick Daymond. He was preceded by Mr Andrew Cunningham.

The school is regularly listed in reports and newspapers as one of the top state schools in the country. This is for general standards as well as A-Level and GCSE results scores.

Roundwood Park has strong links with other local schools, in particular St. George's School and Sir John Lawes School, both in Harpenden. Roundwood Park has healthy competition with both of these schools.

On 11th July 2006, it was announced that the new elected head boy and head girl of the Sixth Form were to be Matthew Peplow and Laura Martin. Last year Emily Blueberry and Imran Shahryar held these posts. The rest of the sixth form team includes Hannah Ross, Jennifer Cairns, Lauren Welsch, Reagen Bradley and others.

In the school year beginning September 2005, Roundwood Park School introduced a discipline system for years 7-11. The idea was borrowed from a school in Birmingham, UK, and is based on students receiving one of six consequences (C1, C2, etc) ranging from a preliminary warning to - in dramatic cases - permanent exclusion from the school. The system has received mixed feedback.

[edit] New Block

This School is split up into many blocks,(normally one for subject). There are plans to expand the school with a new Music/Maths block. Construction will start in 2007. The new block will have disabled-friendly facilities such as a lift and toilets. The new block will stand where the current maths block is. It will be available for teaching in the term commencing 2008/09.

There were also plans of an Astroturf pitch being built on the field but the council received complaints from nearby residents, which students are not at all happy about.

[edit] Sports Achievers

Roundwood has had a few pupils who have gone on to become seriously involved in sports.

Natasha Dowie - England under-21 striker who plays for Charlton F.C. Women's team, left the school last year.

Ryan Gilligan is currently playing his trade with League One side Northampton Town.
