The Round Pond is a pond in Kensington Gardens, London, in front of Kensington Palace. It is, however, not at all round, but more like a square with protuberances at the corners. It is well known by this name to generations of local children who have used it to sail model boats (which sooner or later have to be retrieved by parents or keepers), and have occasionally fallen in (but since the pond is quite shallow, they more rarely have to retrieved). In marked contrast with the nearby Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, the pond has entertained children for a couple of hundred years without political correctness or material difficulty.

Another Round Pond is located in Ridgefield, Connecticut [(http://ridgefieldct.org)] USA. Formed by a receding glacier she is almost circular, and is 32 acres in size. The pond drains across the state boundary to New York State, into the Cross River reservoir, providing an initial flow to the City of New York. Once used as a reservoir for city water for Ridgefield, the spring fed aqueduct is no longer used for that purpose. A fishing ban in the mid 1800’s stands today, and the pond is no longer available for fishing.
