Rougsø municipality

Rougsø municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Aarhus County on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in central Denmark. It covers an area of 224 km², and has a total population of 8.078 (2005). Its mayor is Torben Jensen.
The site of its municipal council is Allingåbro. Other towns in the municipality are Gjesing, Holbæk, Nørager, Vivild, and Ørsted.
Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Sønderhald and Midtdjurs to the south, and Nørre Djurs to the east. Neighboring municipality to the west Nørhald is separated from the municipality by the waters of Randers Fjord, which define the municipality's western border. To the southwest is Grund Fjord, which helps to define the municipality's southwestern border. To the north and northeast is Ålborg Bay (Ålborg Bugt), and beyond that the waters of the Kattegat.
By January 1, 2007 Rougsø municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be combined with existing Nørre Djurs and Grenaa municipalities, along with the eastern part of Sønderhald municipality to form the new Norddjurs municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 661 km² and a total population of 34,382 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
