[edit] Location

Rose Bay borders Vaucluse to the north, Dover Heights to the east, North Bondi to the south-east, and Bellevue Hill to the south-west. Lyne Park abuts Sydney Harbour, on its west.

Rose Bay is one of Sydney's most desirable and affluent suburbs. It is one of the few places both the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge can be viewed together.

[edit] History

Rose Bay was named after The Right Honourable George Rose (he was not knighted) who was joint Secretary to the British Treasury with Thomas Steele, after whom Steel(e) Point at Nielsen Park was named. The name Rose Bay was used as early as 1778 by Captain John Hunter[1].

From 1938 sea planes have landed in Sydney Harbour on Rose Bay and so this is Sydney's first international airport. There is a nearby restaurant called Catalina. There is also a ferry wharf which commuters can catch in to the city or to Watsons Bay.

The Wintergarden was a landmark building which housed the Sydney Film Festival from 1968 to 1973, which was demolished to make way for exclusive apartments in the late 1980s.

ROSE BAY LODGE - Salisbury Road, Rose Bay. The house was built in 1834 by architect John Verge for James Holt who, at the time, managed the 'Cooper Estate'. When built, it was the only house on the 'Estate' with the possible exception of Henrietta Villa, Capt. Piper's previous home on Point Piper. The house was built as a single storey verandahed residence of about 20 squares (186 sq. m.) over a similar sized stone cellar. It was surrounded by extensive gardens embellished by five working fountains fed from a water source above on the slopes of Bellevue Hill which later fed 'Woollahra House', built in 1883 on Point Piper. One of the fountains still remains. Prominent occupiers of the house included Sir Daniel Cooper (his son Daniel was born there in 1848), Walter Lamb (1825-1906) and Sir John Hay (1816-1892) - they were all noted businessmen and parliamentarians. In 1911, the property, then of 4 acres (1.6 ha), was sub divided and built on. Although historically 'disowned', the old house remained but with considerable unsympathetic extensions, including a second storey. It has subsequently been sympathetically refurbished and brought back to what it was ca 1910.

[edit] Schools

Private schools include Kambala Girls School, an Anglican all girls school with a grey uniform and fairly strong theatre and music departments. Kincoppal - Rose Bay is a Catholic school consisting of a senior, all girls school and a cooeducational junior school. Kincoppal - Rose Bay was originally Rose Bay Convent but amalgamated with Kincoppal Elizabeth Bay in the late 1970's to become "Kincoppal - Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart".

Recently in addition to Rose Bay Public School a new public high school opened up in Rose Bay, the Rose Bay Secondary College. It was formed by the amalgamation of Vaucluse High School and Dover Heights High School, (formerly Vaucluse Boys High, Dover Heights Boys High and Dover Heights Girls High- once referred to as "the brothel on the hill"). The cost of improving the school facilities at Rose Bay were to be funded by the sale of the campus at Vaucluse, but a recent surge in enrollments associated with the improved facilities has put the sale in doubt.

[edit] Recreation

There are two golf courses located in Rose Bay: Woollahra Golf Club; a public 9-hole course. Royal Sydney Golf Club; a private 27-hole championship course, not open to the public.
