Roscommon (Dáil Éireann constituency)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roscommon was an parliamentary constituency in the Irish Free State and in the Republic of Ireland, returning Teachtaí Dála (TDs) to Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (Irish Parliament). It covered the whole of County Roscommon, and elections were held by the method of proportional representation known as the Single Transferable Vote (known as STV, or PR-STV).
[edit] History
The Roscommon constituency has had two separate periods of existence:
- from the 1923 general election until its abolition at the 1969 general election, when it was amalgamated into the Roscommon-Leitrim constituency. At different periods it returned 4, 3 or 4 TDs.
- as a 3-seater from the 1981 general election until its abolition at the 1992 general election to be replaced by the 4-seat Longford-Roscommon constituency.
From the next general election (due in 2006/7), the county will be represented by the new Roscommon-South Leitrim constituency.
