[edit] History

The Ropewalk Shopping Centre started life as the Queens Arcade. For many years, the Queens Arcade was ageing and needed replacing, with many stores inside empty or just small cheap businesses. In 2001, the local Council decided to replace the arcade with a new shopping centre. A design to have 3 floors with a bowling alley and cinema was dismissed because the council did not want the car park on top of the shopping centre. In a bizarre twist, the Council only wanted the car park behind the Queens Arcade to have the new shopping centre and yet again, the council voted against the plan. However in 2003, a new design was drawn up and it was passed. It included the plan to demolish the Queens Arcade for a new state-of-the art shopping Centre. The project cost £70 Million pounds and in 2005 was completed. The Ropewalk Car Park was built first so that the loss of Car Park spaces that the new shopping Centre would take would not hit car users.

The Centre has now been trading since late 2005 and has enjoyed success in re-juvenating Nuneaton, making it a first class retail destination in the West Midlands, with big name UK fashion retailers and a host of well known High Street names.
