Roofus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roofus is a red, scottish hound from the semi-popular videogame for the Playstation 2, computer, and Sega Dreamcast, Fur Fighters. He is commonly shown as the leader of the team, and like his friends, fight and plot against General Viggo in order to save his family. The name "Roofus" takes a play on "Rufus", as he is a dog. He is voiced by Scott McMurrey.

[edit] History

Born in the gritty slums of Glasgow, Scotland, Roofus has developed a tough and analytical exterior. It has been surmised that he joined the army at a young age, for when it is his turn in the Bad Place, his hometown is shown in the middle of the war. Given this, Roofus more than likely ranked high in his stats, because back on his home in Fur Fighter Village, he is shown in a portrait in a military outfit. However, tough of a soldier as he was, Roofus shunned many medals and took his honor internally than externally, showing that he was a loyal servant of the military indeed.

Roofus, during his teenage years, met a girl by the name of Winifred, or "Winnie". He married her and they now have a bunch of kids. They are a traditional family and both spouses love one another very much, as it is evident in their struggle when Winnie is placed under Viggo's control. Roofus could have possibly led the Fur Fighters to capture General viggo in the first place, which was why General Viggo broke out of jail and went straight for the Fur Fighters.

[edit] Personality

Given the fact that Roofus had served time in the military, he seems to be pretty straightforward. Roofus also carries the weight on his shoulders as the leader of the Fur Fighters, meaning that it is primarily his job to figure out what kind of approach to take on to his enemies (as in the introduction, where he instantly fired questions on the teleportation devices to the Fur Fighters). Roofus also seems to be the trainer of many young Fur Fighters and is a role model for them. He is soft at heart, though, as it is shown that he loves Winifred very, very much. When both his children and Winnie are taken away, his valiance shows and he knows that if he doesn't fight for his family, Viggo will torture them. Alongside his journey is Bungalow. Feeble-minded as the kangaroo may be, Bungalow is Roofus' best friend among the Fur Fighters. Roofus also has a close relationship with a ghostly walrus by the name of General Bristol, both his advisor and probably past leader.

[edit] Skills

Like the rest of the Fur Fighters, Roofus has his own individual skill. He is a well-rounded character, in terms of his jump, his speed, and his height. He's rather average and his stats seem to be the most moderate, given the fact that he is the leader and is supposed to be this way.

Roofus' favorable feature, though, is his burrowing technique. Being a dog, Roofus has the keen ability of digging into soft dirt, creating a tunnel underground, and popping up on the other side of an obstacle. This is especially helpful in New Quack City, in the level resembling the twin towers. There is a point in the level where there is a parking lot, and over to the right is a burrowing mound. Roofus is to go inside the hole, and then must head through a series of tunnels to rescue his pup.

The hound dog also seems to be especially skilled with the pistol. Many, many times has Roofus been shown in the cutscenes and in artwork of holding a pistol. Even if the pistol is a general weapon (it's the first weapon the player is able to get), it can receive upgrades of the sub-machine gun and then to the machine gun. Roofus' military service also shows, where he is able to stand on the same ground as a tank. In the beginning, Roofus charges forward and headbutts the tank with tremendous strength and knocks it over (if anything, this was just a cool effect to show off the character). In the Bad Place, Roofus' hometown is under attack. It is his job to blow up not one tank, but two.

Once Roofus is infected with the fleas in Beaver Dam in the Port-O-Potty, his old physical skill (no weapons) of punching his foe is now replaced with a headbutt. This does 50% more damage than his punch, and he lets out a different noise than before.

Another thing that can be explained as a "skill" is after the player defeats Winnie and Mai. In Roofus' home upstairs is the game Super Snake, the updated version of the first game the player received when they beat Gwyneth in New Quack City (Snake is in Rico's house. The prize for not running into walls or the player's self and earning a score of over 6000 is the Fish-Eye cheat. When turned on, this cheat allows the player to see everything in Fish-Eye view.

[edit] The Bad Place

The Bad Place is a portal in which the Fur Fighters enter and find that they are trapped in their very worst nightmares. Roofus is the head hauncho of the team, and therefore is supposed to have the most horrid and awful dream of all. His dream is the last, and it begins where his hometown is under enemy siege. There is absolutely nobody on the streets but Roofus himself, guised in his old military outfit. Everybody seems to be cowering from the patrol of the heavy army tanks that stalk the streets... or dead.

Player's View: The first place you land will be in the top floor of a building. Head down the stairs on the right to the bottom-most floor and retrieve the first dynamite in the entirely windowed room. Don't worry, the windows won't break if the tank goes by and tries to demolish you. Once the tank passes, head out and take the path all the way to the right, as so you can avoid the tank. Inside the other entirely windowed room is another package of dynamite. Walk out to the first pair of bridges (not the one straight ahead of you, but the one back by the first windowed room), and fall into the water. There should be a ledge to climb up on, with what appears to be a platform. Roofus will automatically place the first dynamite when approached. Opposite of you will be a sewer tunnel, and take that route to climb all the way back up near where you first started. You are now on the balcony of the building, above the bridges. Remember this.

Jump down (avoiding the tank as much as possible), and follow the dynamite cord. You should find a detonator that enables you to jump on it. Face the bridges, and wait by standing on the lever. The tank will come around again, and since you are already putting your weight on it, the bridges will partially explode. This makes it impossible for the tank to move, but it will begin to continually shoot you with its missles and machine gun. Get out of the way before you're killed, and head back up to the balcony.

Now, there are two ways to do this next step. It works both in the computer version and Playstation version of each game. The first try is to stand on the ledge of the balcony, and then jump on the reddish-brown part of the tank. This will take precision and practice, as you don't want to get right in the way of the bombs being launched out of the back. By jumping onto the reddish-brown ledge, you can climb up to the top of the tank. The machine gun will turn around and try to shoot itself. Before you're fluffed, shoot the inside capsule of the tank, and it will ultimately blow itself up. The second way to blow up the tank is to simply aim your Cluster Bomber to the sky and guess where exactly the hole is to shoot. Both ways do work, and have been praised by all players. Some say that one is more difficult than the other, and vice versa. Use whichever way works for you.

The second tank to tackle is less complicated. After the cutscene, a new path has opened up in the town. Begin to follow it and you will find the tank. Manuever around to the back of it, where there is simply an open hatch. Jump onto the back of it and place the second dynamite down, and the tank will blow up and show you the exit of the Bad Place.

Retrieve the only and sacred baby of the Bad Place, and return to the hub.

[edit] Winnie and Mai Boss Battle

This battle is through the combined efforts of Roofus and Chang. Both of their spouses have been captured and mutated by General Viggo, and end up in horrible results. Winnie is a gigantic beast plundering across a stadium, with enlarged and albino Mai clinging to her neck.

Player's View: Run towards Winnie and walk underneath the middle of her jaw (it is the way to take the least amount of damage). Immediately turn around and shoot as much as you can at Mai on Winnie's neck. Winnie will stutter and turn around, just keep getting as many shots as possible while you have her in one spot. When you have done it enough, Mai will fall down and begin shooting laser beams from her eyes at you. It is really tough to avoid, so run like hell to the burrow and it will take you inside that island. Change into Chang, and switch to the freeze gun. Mai will come inside the island where you are, so do your best to aim where you think she is coming (by where the beams are coming from) and then freeze her when she is over that green liquid (it will only work on top of the liquid). Then use whatever weapon you want to damage her, and she will unfreeze. If you are fast enough, you can freeze and damage her several times on one go. When she takes enough damage she will move back to the outside and cling again to Winnie. Follow the pattern for both Winnie and Mai until they are defeated.

You will automatically be transported to Viggo-A-Goggo.

[edit] Music

As in every unique feature of Fur Fighter, Roofus also has his own twinge on music. Most of his songs are incoporated with the traditional Scottish bagpipe, and feature the drumming of a snare, his army tone showing once again.
