An article, (Wikipedia:Paris is in France), I am proud to be WP:BOLD on! Added valued wikilinks. Ronbo76 16:10, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Love this essay.! I have to write one of my own because it shows a side of me that only a few have seen. Who said life is a box of chocolates? It's not when you have a box of rocks for a brain. I know I can be pretty senseless, obtuse and denseful (is that word?). Guess so - it has a wikilink. Ronbo76 14:02, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User:Taylor364's legal claim

That user has been deleting Talk:Kate Mulgrew. Supposedly there is something private in Mulgrew's past about the daughter she gave up for adoption to whom she was reconciled (according to another user claiming to be her husband) which has not been verified. Unfortunately Mulgrew's own website and multiple reliable sources are available for just about all aspects of the adoption/reconcilation. I do not to the best of my memory believe the daughter's name has been posted on Mulgrew's article.

Prior to the privacy claim, the article had a NPOV that IMHO was positive and in accordance with (IAW) WP:BLP. Upon the privacy claim, I invited a WP:BLP member to look over the article. He made some tweaks and recommendations. In addition, he provided the alleged husband with distinct methods of contacting Wikipedia directly to advance his issue. To date, this alleged person, who was a governor candidate, has not availed himself of the means to get the info stricken.

I am an average joe. But, if there was something I did not want on Wikipedia and was given the means to have it deleted IAW WP:BLP, I would exhaust all means. Ronbo76 22:40, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] move

I have moved WP:ROFL to Wikipedia:ROFL. Clearly the article was in the wrong namespace and until the article achieves some importance, I do not think that a "WP:" redirect to it can be justified. -- RHaworth 04:01, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

I have just deleted, WP:ROTFL. Advertise your essay in the Village pump and similar places. -- RHaworth 04:04, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

This is the Village pump. Kim has already joined in with this discussion. Kim has been around a long time and can point you to other places. -- RHaworth 04:14, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I kinda organized the project and set it up and what not, don't know why it isn't very active it has more members than it did when I started it but I can't get anyone to respond on the talk pages, there are a bunch of open questions and stuff that needs sorted out, feel free to chime in. [edit] Dennis Johnson

I am adding back in "reports" about Johnson's weight (rumor was a poor choice of words on my part). It was reported on Boston sports radio WEEI by both former Celtic player Chris Ford and the play-by-play announcer for the Austin Toros.

It has to be in a published reliable source, meaning not radio unless a transcript appears. Ronbo76 15:14, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
His weight may have played a factor but that is unknown and not citeable unless a Wikipedia:Reliable sources published source exists for it. I see someone else has put the reference to WP:BLP on your talkpage. Although dead, Johnson and his family still have a reasonable expectation per that reference that poorly sourced information in a bio will be removed immediately. Until someone puts in writing such as in a coroner's report or other citeable source it cannot be used. Please read the wikilinks provided. Ronbo76 15:20, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Help

Hey Ronbo. Can you help me? I am trying to defend the Wiki against a spammer, User:JazzButcher I have reported him at AIV but they say its too complex, it seems the system is tilted in this guys favor. Basically the user in question has been inserting information about a non notable arcade into the DeKalb, Illinois article, first from an anon IP and then from a user account. I don't know what to do now. Any help would be appreciated.A mcmurray 03:00, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

Never mind I found where to report it.A mcmurray 03:12, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

As to your question, WP:AIV is where I usually report vandals. It takes vandalization past the fourth warning or a blatant vandal for the admins to do something. Typically a blatant vandal is somebody on a hate mission or obvious spammer. Sometimes even the spammer needs to exceed four warnings before blockage will occur.

Warnings should be progressive. This means that Wikipedia:Assume good faith should be applied in giving warnings. However as a Recent changes patrol editior, I can now distinguish between a good faith editor (an attempt to add info and obvious vandalism. If the person types in a distinct message, i.e., screw you blah, blah, blah with a page blanking/deletion, that is not a good faith edit which should be level two warning and come from Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace.

Your other tools come from the WP:AIV admin boards and the vandal headings listed on the Special:Recentchanges page. Please the header called Utilities where the Wikipedia:Requests for comment page is found. An RfC could be used to identify someone with an agenda. Be careful with it and its application as it could turn in your face. I would advise looking at how the archive (Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User conduct/Archive) has played out with other individuals. Read the RfC page carefully and fully. Then look at the archives. If you feel that an RfC is necessary, get your ducks in line quacking in harmony before you go down that road.

Thanks also for protecting my page. Ronbo76 01:15, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Spanish naming customs

You wrote:

While worded not the best, it is a custom still followed in many Spanish speaking countries depending on how traditional the family (and in particular the mom is). I disagree with removal. Antonio Banderas is just one example of many film stars that have more than one surname from their parents that recognizes the family lineage. In his case, his father's name should be Dominguez if his mom followed the tradition. Some moms now follow the American way of naming with mom's name as the second surname followed by the dad's. My mom even followed the tradition when she married. She had no middle name and kept her last name which became her middle name followed by my dad's last name. Recommend restoring the paragraph with rework which I will be glad to do. BTW, Penélope Cruz is another example. I have plenty of Mexican, Spanish, etal people who follow the traditional Iberian naming custom. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ronbo76 (talkcontribs).

I replied:

My friend, the question here is not if there are or not other countries that follow the naming customs of Spain. The question here is that the naming customs of Spain do not mean Iberian naming customs, since the Portuguese naming customs (see Portuguese names) are quite different.

[edit] Bear Flaggers

I have to say, comparing the Texas organization of revolt and personnel involved with the Bear Flag revolt simply is no comparison...you're talking 30 or so immigrants with no respect for the Spanish culture, having left their US territories with zero assets, immigrating into a society that was sovereign and taking advantage of the Mexican's good nature and kindness, and laying claim to something that was not theirs to begin with.....laying claim to California? preposterous...no more than a drunken rabble of a gang, raising hell and causing troubble like most of the American commons of that era....and Freemont was not much better....anyway, those drunken morons got their butts kicked in the battles in Southern California....from my research, the so called Bear Flaggers were most of the US casualties and desertions...DonDeigo 19:34, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Don't think it's a real project per se but it is hilarious, no? Plus the fantastic userbox!!! See my user page. As for the ghost towns I am certain there are some abandoned research station. As the scope of the GT project (right now) is only the United States, I think only U.S. related abandon stations would apply to the project, as many of them are more small towns than research stations. Of course, I would like to see articles about all of them myself. : ) Not sure how many of the GT Project users are actually active though, I posted an announcement at the community portal seeking new memeber, so we shall see.
Things will always get better, not just for the project but for you too, Ronbo. My thoughts are with you. Good friends are hard to come by and when they leave us we can only take with us the things they brought into our lives that made the world a better place for a little while. [edit] Proxy in Romania

Hi Ronbo,

I know: I was watching. I'm a wee bit skeptical, for a couple reasons: it's an IP in Romania, which has quite a low likelihood of just happening on the English Wikipedia right after a block; and it was one recently used by the Wikipedia:Long term abuse/George Reeves Person. The editing style of the anon there matches GRP's exactly. For WP:BEANS reasons, I'd need to tell you more by e-mail. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 18:39, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome

Hi, Ronbo76, and welcome to WikiProject
San Francisco Bay Area
!

We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying, categorizing, and improving articles relevant to the Bay Area. Here are some points that may be helpful:

  • Our main aim is to help improve Bay Area-related articles, so if people ask for help with an article, please try your hardest to help them if you are able.
  • Most important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page. It is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
  • The project has several ongoing and developing activities, such as article quality assessment, which you are welcome to participate.
  • Our system for improving lower-quality articles is Jumpaclass. If you'll be editing stub, start, or B-class articles, consider using Jumpaclass to track your progress.
  • If you have another language besides English, please consider adding yourself to our translation section, to help us improve our foreign Bay Area topics.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

Again, welcome! We hope you enjoy working on this project.

Acknowledge that I made a joke? I made a joke in an edit summary. If you really have a huge problem with this, file a report somewhere. Philip Gronowski Contribs 15:59, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I remember a {{uw-joke1}} template. I will say that showing frustration at spam, which is what Philip is doing, only encourages them. 151.202.74.135 16:12, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Concur. It is not what I would expect from this user (PG) who wants to be an administrator. Ronbo76 16:23, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
To be fair, your initial message is also a bit harsh there. In any case, PG needs to be told in a friendly way that this kind of edit summaries, along with his reaction to the criticism, will return to haunt him if he runs for adminship. 151.202.74.135 16:26, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
No, I carefully considered my words. It is one thing to be frustrated by the spammer and call them a name. But to refer to an article concerning an international female star by the same name crosses the line. A recent attack to my userpage had one user ask that I contact an administrator to erase the comments/summary there. I chose not to because I considered a badge of honor. In PG's case, I almost did refer it to a board but chose to contact this user only after walking away from the computer to calm myself down and carefully consider the choice of words.
In this instance, when I use certain words like please, next to civil manners are what every Wikipedian should strive to. The fact that he continues to not take ownership is a troubling matter along with his rebuke calling for a report. Ronbo76 16:40, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Oops, I missed the second part of his comment. Yeah, he crossed the line there. 151.202.74.135 16:44, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Even now, I remember the words of a great coach, Jim_Valvano#Death along with his quotes. Great people shape our lives - we never know how words will affect others. Ronbo76 16:51, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kit Carson changes on March 14

Hi Ronbo 76. There was a change in the wording on the Kit Carson article by 207.172.135.21 on March 14. When I read them, they seemed to improve the article, I have no objections to keeping them. I noticed your reversion, and appreceiate your attention to the article, and don't want to upset you either. Do you mind if I change the wording back to what 207.172.135.21 wrote? Richiar 01:36, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

There was a POV push along with misspellings as well as an unsourced quote. If you wish to do a copyedit minus the quote and POV push, you're welcome. Ronbo76 01:40, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Here is the main part I objected to:

The fur industry was undermined by twin blows of changing fashion, as demand for silk hats replacing the demand for beaver fur, and the devastation of the beaver population through over-hunting. As a result, many trappers found themselves in search of a livelihood. Carson remembered, "Beaver was getting scarce, it became necessary to try our hand at something else". [edit] Michael Shelfer COI by RHaworth

Hi Ronbo 76. First of all let me say Thank You for the edit to the article that I posted regarding my son, Michael Shelfer (18:35, 16 March 2007 Ronbo76 (Talk | contribs) (Copyedit, wikilinks, references formatted, categories added). I am a neophyte at using Wikipedia as you can probably tell.

  • Since first posting the article, it has received attack after attack from one, RHaworth, his latest being, 20:15, 16 March 2007 RHaworth (Talk | contribs) ({{COI}} written by Michael's dad). The information that I posted about Michael seems unbiased and well sourced as the biography of a professionally published American manga artist. Though I am Michael's father, I don't see how the information that I posted and which you edited represents a COI. Is there a successful way to resolve the issue?

[edit] Re: Michael Shelfer and WP:COI

I will tell you straight up as another user: edits by family to an article no matter how well intended do not sit well with the Wikipedian community. Please follow the link in WP:COI above to see what it says. In addition, I will draw your attention to Wikipedia:Autobiography. Please read because I too now feel a Conflict of Interest exists. I would advise not to perform any more edits to this article.

After I post here, I will revert to the last page posted by the user referenced on my user talkpage. Ronbo76 21:01, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Ronbo76

Thank you for your comments. In response, I would like to clarify a few things about the subject article and the reason why it was submitted.

  • I've received so much flack after posting the article referring to Michael Shelfer that I'm really considering never signing into Wikipedia again. Some members seem to think that the article is a conflict of interests (COI), un-noteworthy, or poorly sourced. I'm a new user of Wikipedia and I'm not here to make enemies or to offend anyone. I also admit that I don't have a handle on all the rules yet. I'm also Michael Shelfer's father and, with out question, very proud to be so. However, I've attempted to edit, reword or remove anything that could legitimately be considered of questionable content, or of ulterior or promotional motive. Michael Shelfer, the American manga artist, is already listed in the content of previously existing Wikipedia articles which no one seems to have had issue with. The information currently contained in the article Michael Shelfer is intended to be entirely consistent with and supplemental to information contained in the referenced and sourced Wikipedia articles. I understand that Wikipedia isn't an ad page. That was never the objective of the article on Michael Shelfer in the first place. The article was purely intended to inform and educate the public about a notable individual who already has a respectable audience or, as the industry calls it, "fan base". One of the best ways to achieve that seemed to be in posting his biography, information regarding his artistic career to date and some applicable reference and source links on Wikipedia. In reading the posted article on Michael Shelfer, his notability should be evident. In questioning Michael’s notability, the user, RHaworth, further asserts COI because I happen to be his father. As long as the article isn’t biased in a promotional way and doesn’t contain information which can’t be referenced to publicly available, professional sources, why should the fact that I’m his father be and issue? I'm a retired geologist with many, many hobbies and much better things to do than defend ridiculous assertions of COI made by individuals who haven't a clue about what motives I do or do not have. As a retired professional, academic and author of many professional scientific papers, I’ve never attempted to use my association with another to promote ideas or information or to otherwise operate in any manor which could be considered a conflict of interest. My personal and professional ethics would never allow me to be engaged in such activities. The information regarding Michael Shelfer which I placed on Wikipedia can be confirmed by any one who has an interest in doing so. The article can be edited by anyone having the desire and initiative to edit it. Instead of attempting to discredit the article, why not allow Wikipedia contributors the opportunity to edit the information as necessary and make it available for all interested parties to have access to. After all, isn't that the reason and premise for Wikipedia's existence? Instead of the negative responses that the article's received thus far, aren't there any Wikipedia contributors who could offer some constructive criticism in helping to edit the article’s information making it more and more suitably informative and available for the general public's use? The reason that I blanked the page (and was admonished for doing so by Bsroiaadn) was partially because of one individual's constant negative attacks on the merit, content and appropriateness of the article; but primarily because of the lack of constructive input by most of those who made comments or changes. In blanking the article, my intention was to terminate the article and resolve the issues that have been voiced thus far, once and for all. I don't need this and I'm quiet sure that Michael Shelfer doesn’t either; he's currently as busy as he can be at work on "Dead Already" Volume 2 plus a brand new graphic novel series for TOKYOPOP. If this is how Wikipedia members welcome new contributors, then I don't believe I need to be involved with making any new contributions, edits or further use of Wikipedia information in the future. If there's anyone associated with Wikipedia management, editorial staff or who's a general contributor who cares to evaluate the situation and make a comment I'll be happy to read their point of view.

[edit] Advice from other user's talkpage

You really need to read and understand WP:COI#Close relationships. Most Wikipedians, as per the opening WP:COI paragragh, have a strong aversion to seeing articles created or editted by either the subject matter, family or friends. No offense, but that is just the way Wikipedia is. I recommend you please do not edit an article about your son because then it would become what some may perceive as a Wikipedia:Autobiography and a conflict of interest which affects the article's neutral point of view. Once another editor feels that those lines have been crossed, you and the article become subject to Wikipedia policy.
If you find errors in the article, please request a change on the article talkpage or file a report as per its talkpage at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard.
The very last thing you should do is what you have done:
  • You over-rode or reverted the change I told I was going to make. - Being accused of a COI and reverting another editor, no matter how good your intentions, will mostly draw you a warning.
  • Blanking or erasing the page. - This is typically the reaction of an editor who is asking for someone to nominate the article for deletion.
  • You have continued to take down a maintenance tag/banner that you should do because you are considered in violation of WP:COI.
As an editor, who reviews recent changes/pages, your edits caught my attention. I tried to correct the article as best I could but your continued edits will bring you and the article more administrative attention.
The best thing I can tell you is that you have to have a thick skin to survive on Wikipedia. If you do not like its policies and go contra them, you will not like it here and will find life miserable. I sincerely suggest you read all the applicable blue wikilinks I have provided you and ask that you understand this is not meant negatively towards you or your son. That is easy for me to say because I am not at the brunt of your perceived spear.
I also need to inform you that I will restore the maintenance banner in two minutes after I finish this message. PLEASE DO REMOVE THE BANNER or CONTINUE EDITTING your son's article. Use the talkpage to request changes. If that fails, file a report with the WP:BLP noticeboard. Ronbo76 01:13, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

To Ronbo76, Bsroiaadn and RHaworth:

Thank you for your comments. I appreciate your willingness to educate me to the policies of Wikipedia. Had I had prior knowledge of the policies, I would not have posted the article to begin with. Now, I understand. Historically, I've experienced hostile attacks against a website on the Internet and also virus attacks against my own personal computer. Anti-virus software has cost me plenty over the years. When RHaworth redirected the link, applied the COI tag and made his comments, I reacted defensively because I perceived it to be a personal and hostile attack against the posting. If I own Mr. RHaworth an apology, then of course, I apologize. I would have preferred Mr. RHaworth to have had the courtesy to have sent me a brief note explaining the reason for his actions. At least that would have been the more professional way to have conducted his edit. In the future if the article remains on Wikipedia, I'll take no further action with respect to editing or changing the article in any way. If the managing editors of Wikipedia feel the article is in violation of Wikipedia convention and its continued existence on Wikipedia has no merit, then they should remove it; the sooner, the better. I would prefer its removal to having it continue to exist with the COI moniker on it. Once again, thank you for your willingness to educate me and the time it took you to do it. (FAShelfer 18:48, 17 March 2007 (UTC))

Thanks for your message. You have seem to have picked up on the learning curve which sometimes throws new users for a loop because they refuse to acknowledge personal attachment to an article.
Sometimes an editor does not have the time to educate a new reader we depend upon new users to read the messages left on their talkpages and to read the wikilinked policy that appears in blue. It is kind of like the adage about leading a horse to water. Quite honestly, yesterday was not a good day for me in terms of a fever but I muddled through and tried to help you. I trust you will carefully consider all the words I sent your way.
In addition, I did contact the other RC Patrol editor and interceded on your behalf to get the warning reduced from a Level Three which is one warning away from getting blocked. He read, agreed and reduced his warning. Bsroiaadn did not have to have to do that and was gracious in leniency towards you. I also hope you will consider that.
I do not know what will happen to the article. My advice to you remains the same: use its talkpage or the WP:BLP board to get changes you feel need implementation. Good luck, Ronbo76 19:59, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Legal Threat warning at User talk:Fu007dan

Hi, the legal threat warning you placed there unfortunately doesn't go that high. Legal3 is the highest warning there is right now. WP:UTM has a nice table of warnings to place in users' talk pages. Thanks for your time! UnfriendlyFire 06:25, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I noticed that. I had L3 open and changed the 3 to a 4. Unfortunately, I cannot edit the page after the block. Ronbo76 06:26, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. I thought it would be best to let you know here rather than edit your edit. I wasn't sure which warning level you were looking for. Cheers, UnfriendlyFire 06:35, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
I tried but the window comes up empty. I have never tried to edit a page blocked by an admin before. If you can edit it to a Level Three (the highest legal level available), please do! Ronbo76 06:37, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Obama comments

RE Obama, nothing deleted was done with evil intent but I'll talk about it more in the future, okay? On the other hand, normal stuff (nothing derogatory or vandalism) that I put up was deleted by others with no discussion. That's a double standard.Dereks1x 20:30, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

No double standard involved. Your deletions are throwing off the POV of the article. You need to discuss your intentions fully on the talkpage before deleting cited material. If need be, introduce a new paragraph that is a counterpoint with citations. Ronbo76 20:34, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 3RR Warning issued in retaliation by another user

Yesterday, Dereks1x issued a 3RR warning on my userpage (diffs) because on the basis of his disruptive edits to Barak Obama (please see diffs) and my warnings to him on his talkpage (please see diffs.

The warnings were issued to Dereks1x because he began to delete material to Obama's article in based upon what he deemed non-important. His actions seem to stem from the Obama talkpage discussion about his attendance at a high school (please see Dereks1x assertion of notability).

This point becomes important because after his deletions to Obama's article he inserted a POV statement about Punahou HS (please see Punahou School fact diffs).

My actions were as Recent Changes Patrol editor who has Obama's article on my Watchlist because it receives lots of vandalism. When Dereks1x 14th edit/deletion to this article was made (please see 14th edit diffs, I contacted him on his talkpage (please see Last edit to Barack Obama deleted cited material diffs) asking him not to delete cited material and to seek consensus on that article's talkpage.

When he continued to delete cited material based upon his interpretation of importance I reverted him twice and issued him a Level One Delete template message diffs followed by a advice to discuss on talkpage intentions diffs.

After the first revert, I went to Obama's talkpage to discuss the basis of my revert diffs. When Dereks1x replied on that talkpage diffs with no edit summary {as well as a break-up of the header because of this user's inexperience in placing a sig on a talkpage}, I realized that he was on an edit war and that my subsequent reversion/title=User_talk:Dereks1x&diff=next&oldid=115859674 Level two message diffs to him was not going to sway him.

When Dereks1x continued to delete material, I issued him a 3RR Warning.

At this point, I wrote on Obama's talkpage that I would not engage in an edit war with this user (please see recommend another editor review today's deletions diffs).

After attending to one other item on my Watchlist, I walked away from my computer to observe Wikipedia:Staying cool when the editing gets hot. Upon logging in today, March 18, 2007, I noticed that Dereks1x had used my userpage for the second page as a place to issue a 3RR warning to me (please see diffs {again with no edit summary}.

I am fully cognizant with 3RR and my revert actions on Obama's article Obama history as of March 18, 2007/rv deleted paragraph with citations make it relevant - pls discuss on talkpage diffs to my third and last revert (please see rv deletion without discussion cited material - pls see talkpage diffs indicate that I had ceased further edit wars.

Dereks1x performed nine more edits after my 3RR warning only to have his final edit/deletion reverted by another editor (please see rv: disruptive editing diffs).

After posting this message to my talkpage, I will revert the obvious retaliation message issued to my userpage by this user. Ronbo76 15:09, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Noob seeking advice

Hello, I dont know if i am doing this right or not or what, but i am interested in making pages for wikipedia/whatever it is you people do and i thought a good way to start would be to write a page about my appartment building. it could be useful, after all, and i dont think it is advertising. Bakerstmd 03:35, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notability requirements

I would recommend that you look at the welcome message and click the highlighted wikilink to How to write a great article. Not every article written for Wikipedia is notable. Please see Wikipedia:Notability and then perhaps a subheader for buildings.

Since you are from Illinois, I recommend you see how an article about a famous building is written. Please see the Sears Tower. One recommendation I would further make is you look at its talkpage (Talk:Sears Tower). It is supported by the Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago. Most projects have a backload of articles that either need attention or creation.

In fact, I am also familar with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Illinois as a member from that project has requested my aid on several articles. One article I helped that project was with the Chana School.

Looking at your userpage, I noticed you are asking for some user to adopt you. I recommend signing up at the project of your choice by reading the main project page; signing up where indicated and then introducing yourself on the project talkpage. I am sure the Wikipedia:WikiProject Illinois would love to have a new member who wants to develop articles.

You could even mention there that you have developed your article and need help with it. Somethere there can give you more aid than me. Ronbo76 03:49, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Benjamin D. Wilson declared Start-icle

I was a little surprised to see the Wilson article declared a Start. This article pretty much says all that there is to be said of Wilson. Do you think or know something is missing?--Magi Media 04:04, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

I have rated a number of articles for various projects to include the WP:CAL, bio tags, every project tag on my userpage and even been WP:BOLD.

Typically, I put articles on my Watchlist and when they receive an edit, I will revisit them and see if there is some kind of article improvement I can do. In Wilson's case there was not much, but I did rate it for the WP:CAL. I was surprised that someone rated the bio tag so high. Typically the classes differ by the length, quality and other factors that comprise the article.

Your statement about Wilson says pretty much why I rated it Start Class, This article pretty much says all that there is to be said of Wilson. It is short article. While he has a nice infobox and the content is good, it is definely not a B Class article as outlined by one of the former heads of the WP:CAL project. When I began rating articles, I was given a definite standard to rate our articles. Typically a B Class has length, quality, refernces etc. that given the Class B status with Mid importance should be included on the Wikipedia CD. Wilson, unfortunately does not make that cut.

Contrast that article with Leland Stanford, which I found along my Wiki travels and added to our project. I also rated inline with the other projects. Hope this helps. Cheers. Ronbo76 04:16, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Anna Roosevelt, Jr. (Anna Roosevelt Halsted)

It is/was well-known that Anna Roosevelt's nickname was "Sis" growing up. Since both she and her mother were named Anna Eleanor Roosevelt and ER went by her full-name officially, Sis was a reasonable distinction. That can be found in most of the listed sources. This didn't take rocket science to figure out. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.254.33.116 (talkcontribs). THX 01:46, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Reason for deleting citation was that it was modified and was no longer correct

Hello,

Thanks for your concern with my recent changes to the Don Quixote article. There may have been a bit of misunderstanding as to why I deleted the citation. I put in the quote from the Raffel translation a few weeks back (see previous version) and hadn't checked the page until now, but someone changed the cited source to fit the previous paragraph's claim better. In other words, someone else modified the citation and thus the citation was no longer valid. I wasn't sure what to do in this case, but we can't cite it as Raffel's translation since it is not his translation of the first sentence. What should be done in this case? Thanks again, and sorry for the confusion--

Bewtros 21:50, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

I have watched all the translations/edits. Part of the problem is that when the novel was written, Spanish was truly a Romance language with poetic if not literary alliterations. With the evolution of English and even Spanish, any one word can be translated almost 10 different ways at a minimum. I would suggest since someone else modified your original citation, to please discuss what the original statement was. For example, if I had put in a translation saying Los dias tiene calor meant The days are hot with a properly cited source, I would create say exactly that:
The translation said Los dias tiene calor meant The days are hot and was properly cited. I recommend the change be over-turned and restored to its original sentence.
Almost no one could argue with you on that point and would break it out just like this example so every editor can easily see what is the change. Ronbo76 22:09, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
I see what you're saying. However, the problem remains that we are misquoting the translation, which reads "In a village in La Mancha (I don't want to bother you with its name) there lived, not very long ago, one of those gentlemen who keep a lance in the lance-rack, an ancient shield, a skinny old horse, and a fast greyhound" (p.13) and not "In a village in La Mancha (whose name I do not care to recall) there lived, not very long ago, one of those gentlemen who keep a lance in the lance-rack, an ancient shield, a skinny old horse, and a fast greyhound." That is, the problem is not with the translation or the Spanish original but rather with the modifications to the translation--what the article quotes does not in fact exist on p.13 of Raffel's translation. Might it be better to say something like "modified from Raffel's translation" if we insist on doing this and put that in the reference? Bewtros 22:28, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
I have seen both references and actually took a class on this in college. Again, your best bet is to re-inforce on the article talkpage the direct translation. If you are unwilling to do that, then make the recommendation that the direct citation (not talking about the paragragh's words) be deleted. I *highly* recommend the first method because edit wars will commence on the translation. Ronbo76 22:37, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
I'll wait to see what other users say as to what translation we'll use. Let me make sure I understand, however--the article as it stands cites text that does not exist in any particular translation and should remain that way without letting readers know that the translation was modified by a user. I'm just worried that people will think Raffel translated the first sentence thusly when he in fact did not. Just making sure here--thanks for your help. Bewtros 22:49, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
One more time for comprehension. I would place a comment on the talkpage directly stating what the original citation said. Then I am fairly certain someone will back a revert to what was said. Ronbo76 22:51, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
Done! Thanks--Bewtros 22:59, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] ICP

I wanted to protest the change you made to my change on the Insane Clown Posse page. I simply added the factual adjective "gay" before "American horrorcore band." You call it vandalism, I call it truth. Disputing this? Gather me some evidence that proves that they are not gay and I will withdraw my protest.

As I remember the post, it was unsourced by an anonymous IP. This article has the WikiProject Biography tag on meaning that this article falls under the scope of WP:BLP. WP:BLP's second paragraph reads:
  • Unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material — whether negative, positive, or just highly questionable — about living persons should be removed immediately and without discussion from Wikipedia articles, talk pages, user pages, and project space. (WP:BLP emphasis - not mine)

This means that if someone were to contend an allegation like yours, it must be sourced or it will be removed immediately.

Additionally, since your talkpage is red on my screen presently, that means that I did not leave a warning on your talkpage. Ergo, since you posted this as message with your username, why are you posting as an anonymous IP? Ronbo76 13:26, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

My allegation is that your change is in itself an allegation. You are denying that they are gay without any valid evidence. I believe that you should cite a source that proves that they are straight if you are going to delete my factual changes. Delapena_J

Negative, does not work that way. Your POV comment is unsourced. Unsourced comments or allegations as you suggest are not allowed in WP:BLP. Ronbo76 18:57, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: comment placed on my userpage

regarding your entry on my user page, my edit to the national register of hisric places was correct. Neither the Golden Bough Playhouse, nor the Forest Theater are on the actual register.Smatprt 05:59, 20 March 2007 (UTC

Will examine. Ronbo76 17:31, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
Did a search on the NRR site, National Register of Historic Places. Neither exists. However, I am aware of a concern about its supposed demolition because I had seen a TV report about it being a historic site. Here is one reference to that Golden Bough theatre may be demolished. I think I now know why someone may have editted them into the California list of Historic Landmarks. In the paragraph entitled, A dramatic memorial, an engineer used the term, "significant" which is "a designation defined by the National Register of historic resources".
Part of the problem was your deletion without an edit summary or more importantly a discussion on the List of Registered Historic Places in California talkpage which I now see took place. I will do an interim save to read what is going on there as I am playing catch now.
(Finishing comments) If I am a new visitor to a page, I generally discuss whatever changes or deletions I feel are necessary on its talkpage. If I am acting as a Recent changes editor, I do not always have that luxury as I may matching wits with vandals. This page has been on my Watchlist for a while and other senior WP:CAL editors have not removed the entries perhaps for the same reason as me - it may have been inserted and no one caught the error. Me, being fat, dumb and happy knew just enough to be dangerous and danger caught up to me in the form of an error on my part. Sometimes I do make errors and this one seems to be that case.
I do apologize to you and will remove the message template by overstriking my comments. Ronbo76 17:50, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Backmasking

Ronbo, I'm impatient to clear up the original research and neutrality issues with the Satanic messages section, so I would appreciate it it you could detail your specific complaints on the talk page.

I would also ask you to reconsider your assumption that my desire to promote the article qualifies as ownership-type behavior. Perhaps I was over-hasty in nominating it to be a GA while there were still unaddressed objections, but my ratings were based on the objective standards described on the Rational Skepticism assessment page, not on any desire to inflate the article's worth.

Thanks, I appreciate that. Most of the stuff had wikilinks which made it difficult to over-ride. For me to do a copyedit would be difficult as I am only semi-knowledgeable about Bakersfield. Ronbo76 12:16, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

Hi there. IPs should have final warnings within an hour or two of recent activity. Many of your reports to WP:AIV are invalid because the IPs have not vandalized after a recent final warning. Thanks. --Wafulz 17:39, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Thanks for the quick revert of the vandalism to my userpage. It's much appreciated. Kafziel Talk 17:50, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. I still have your page on watch because I learned so much from you about geolinks. I, in turn, have taught to others. I kind of wish all userpages could be semi-protected that only admins and its user could effect changes/writes to it. Ronbo76 12:15, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Mapia

Anyway I could get you to include those external links with the satellite views on Ogle County Courthouse and DeKalb County Courthouse (Illinois)? IvoShandor 07:37, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Done. Ronbo76 16:41, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Thank you sire. : )IvoShandor 18:49, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] BAKERSFIELD

PLEASE GO BACK AND LOOK AT WHAT I CONTRIBUTED TO BAKERSFIELD'S PAGE AND TELL ME WHAT I SAID THAT WAS BIASED. I DIDN'T SAVE IT OR REMEMBER WHAT I WROTE WORD FOR WORD. I AM ASKING BECAUSE I GOT A MESSAGE FROM YOU SAYING THAT MY VIEWPIONT WASN'T NEUTRAL. I SUPPORTED WHAT WAS ALREADY ON THE PAGE AND ADDED MORE INFORMATION THAT I BACKED UP WITH A RELIABLE SOURCE. IF YOU HAVE A SOURCE, AND WHAT YOU ARE CONTRIBUTING TO THE PAGE IS NOT YOUR OWN OPINION, THEN WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? ALSO, WHO IS TO SAY THAT WHAT I PUT IS NOT TRUE AND DELETE IT? PLEASE GET BACK TO ME. THANKS. Cdubbz1 15:47, 27 March 2007 (UTC)CRAIG

First off, putting words in caps is shouting and does not impress me. Second, while I sometimes miss the mark, I did not with this edit. There are several WP:CAL members who have this article on their Watchlist. If one of us makes an error, another would have reversed it. Nice try, though. Ronbo76 15:50, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
First of all, so you know, I am new to this whole Wikipedia thing and didn't know that capital letters meant I was "shouting at you." Secondly, I know very little about how this site works as I have only been a actual member for a few days. Other than that, I would just use Wikipedia for school and work research. I was under the impression that you changed the contribution I made and spent time researching to ensure its accuracy, since your username was at the bottom of the message I received. Sorry for thinking it was you, but YOU can start off by not trying to dog people to sound more intelligent and come across little nicer. But then again, you probably assumed I had been a regular contributor to this site for a while. Overall, it was a little misunderstanding and ignorance on my part due to my lack of experience here. Time to put it behind us my friend. Late.

[edit] San Diego

I'm curious as to why you thought to delete the message I put on the edit page regarding the reference to Anchorman: Ron Burgundy on the San Diego page. My intent was to get people to realize they didn't have to be funny and add that dumb line about San Diego from that movie. I know there will always be dumb people who will try to add it into the article anyway, but I thought that by pointing it out, maybe some would actually think twice before adding it in. I got the idea from the article Diversity which also has a Ron Burgundy line that gets added to that page. Someone there added the same tag about not editing the same thing again and again. If someone thinks its better not to include the line on the San Diego article, I'm not going to worry about it, but I'm just curious about the reasons why we shouldn't include that line. It wasn't showing up in the article, since it was tagged as hidden. --Eric Bekins 17:04, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Most vandals ignore messages like that. Seeing what you put might actually encourage them. There are enough users who watch the page/make regular contributions to the page who can revert that type vandalization. BTW, no one to the best of my knowledge has used the movie reference you provided to translate San Diego. Ronbo76 17:09, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Additionally, my revert record is average enough that other users/state projects have enlisted me to put pages on my Watchlist. Check my contribs and you will see what I mean. Ronbo76 17:13, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
OK, I'll defer on this. But what do you mean, no one has used the movie reference? Only six edits ago someone blanked the entire San Diego page and put in place the movie reference. It happens all the time. But there are people reverting the edits, so life goes on. --Eric Bekins 17:25, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
My mistake. But, the BOT reversed it in the same minute. Additionally, I reverted two unsourced changes prior to your edit. I think I know what I am saying is true: enough users plus BOTs protect the page. Ronbo76 17:30, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
BTW, another user followed up that vandal's edit and placed a level four message on its talkpage. Ronbo76 17:33, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding edits to Spy vs. Spy

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Ronbo76! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia. Please see diff. I am a Recent Pages Patroller who reversed an edit.
I do not appreciate receiving a Spam message on my talkpage when I am doing a reversal that was reversed by your Bot. Please correct. Ronbo76 00:47, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] CSD G4

Just a reminder that this criteria only applies to articles that have been deleted as a result of an AfD discussion, not articles that were prodded or speedily deleted for any reason. If you still think Skywynd meets a CSD criteria, please retag. Natalie 03:59, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

I have seen it used for reposts. I will re-tag it. Ronbo76 04:00, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Trocky

Well, I've blocked the user and his IP. I hope that'll be enough. DS 04:31, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

Hopefully. I have seen other users and anon IPs recreate for friends or to get their kicks. Ronbo76 04:32, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jacking

I've declined the speedy deletion of the above article because I feel it asserts notability in a reasonable way. It was pretty popular for a while, and although the article lacks sources I don't feel comfortable deleting it without discussion. So if you still feel it's not notable enough for an article, you may want to list it at AFD instead. Thanks! Kafziel Talk 12:32, 28 March 2007 (UTC)

I put it up for PROD. Ronbo76 12:34, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
