The buffalo currant (Ribes aureum), also known as the clove currant or the golden currant, is a small to medium-sized deciduous shrub native to the central and south-eastern United States, though specimens have been found as far north as Canada and as far south as Mexico. Throughout its range it is found mainly in sandy or stony habitats; it has a reasonably good tolerance of erratic water availability.

The shrub is typically 2-3 metres tall, with an irregular shape. The bark is grey to reddish-brown, and leaves are green (well duh!) and typically more rounded than Ribes nigrum. ?? Is R. nigrum found wild in USA ?? Flowers are yellow, with 5 petals and 5 sepals. Plants are hermaphrodite, with flowers including 1 ovary and 5 stamens. Typical flowering season is late spring to early summer, with fruit formation leading to ripening in late summer. The fruit is an edible round, black currant, 8-10mm in diameter. The fruit is edible both raw and cooked.

The plant is cultivated, and is becoming naturalised, in Western and Central Europe.
