Roman Catholic Diocese of Steubenville
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Steubenville (Latin: Dioecesis Steubenvicensis) is a Roman Catholic diocese covering thirteen counties in Ohio. The diocese was established on October 21, 1944; its first bishop was the Most Reverend John King Mussio.
The bishops of the diocese are:
- John King Mussio (1944–1977)
- Albert H. Ottenweller (1977–1992)
- Gilbert I. Sheldon (1992–2002)
- R. Daniel Conlon (2002—)
Currently, the Diocese is raising funds to build a new Cathedral, Triumph of the Cross, in the West End of Steubenville, near the Diocesan high school, Steubenville Catholic Central High School. The plans entail combining 6 churches in the city of Steubenville (Holy Name Cathedral, Holy Rosary, St. Pius X, St. Anthony's, St. Stanislaus, and Servants of Christ the King) and building a centrally located Cathedral in order to better accommodate the decline in the area's population and in the number of ordained priests in the Diocese.
