Fate Is the Hunter

You recently changed a link on the Rod Taylor (actor) page (from Fate Is the Hunter to Fate is the Hunter), stating that the change represented the "correct" title. Could you tell me your source? Thanks! Alan smithee 04:14, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

Well, it comes from 2 things: 1) the version with "Is" capitalized is a redirect to the version with "is" in lower case in wikipedia. and 2) words like "is" in titles are not usually capitalized. However, upon further research, I found that imdb.com lists the film with "Is", as do some other sources (from google), but not all. So I would say that "Is" is (I sound like Bill Clinton) probably correct, even though it conflicts with my understanding of standard English syntax. --rogerd 06:20, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
I added a move request so the "Is" version would be primary and "is" would be a redirect. As for English usage, most style guides capitalize "Is" – it's not the length of the word, but the part of speech (etc.) For example, the Chicago Manual of Style (7.127 (Titles of Works – Capitalization)) says that every word in a title has its first letter capitalized except for articles, coordinating conjunctions, prepositions, and the 'to' in infinitives, except for the first and last words of titles and subtitles (which always begin with a capital letter). Nighclub music

Hello, I need the support of a WP administrator becouse a couple of guys are harrassing me. I'm trying to fix the inconsistency and lack of logic of many articles in the "music genre" cathegory. A user, despite the fact that I'm wworking on 2 articles at the same time having put the {{inuse}} template, Housemusic and Club music is reverting my edit endlessly.Brian W 02:08, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

User:132.241.246.111 (Grazon)

132.241.246.111 (suspected to be a sockpuppet of Grazon) has been repeatedly inserting uncited, unsourced, and often provably wrong, accusations about various persons on List of virgins. He doesn't use the discussion page, and his only edit summaries are non-sequiturs (such as "It would") or pointless rationalizations for his reverts ("Hoover&Mehlman are ultra religious&never married"). He also made a personal attack on 64.230.36.236: "she's a virgin just like you". Since you've dealt with him before, perhaps you can do something? He's making these edits under both "Grazon" and "132.241.246.111". wikipediatrix 00:24, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Favorite Songs

My survey has changed. I am now continuing my mission for the best songs, but now I am accepting all genres. I'm giving you a chance to revote for your top ten favorite songs of any genres (not just classic rock which is still the best). I've made a executive decision to keep the existing survey results and just add on to that with the new entries. My feeling for doing this is because classic rock is the most influential genre in music currently so it should be expressed more in the survey. Thank you for contributing in the past, and hopefully in the future. ROCK ON. RENTASTRAWBERRY FOR LET? röck 03:23, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Image:H19 Showing Engine.jpg

Hi Rogerd, im just working on a german articel about the Wright R-1300. I suggest that the engine in the H-19 should be a R-1300. You wrote R-1340 instead. Is this truth? Did i mess up something? -- Stahlkocher 16:35, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

You are correct. According to USAF Museum page about this aircraft it is an Wright R-1300-3 of 700 hp. Thanks for pointing out my error. --rogerd 16:41, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
By the way, there does not seem to be an article in the english wikipedia about the R-1300. Could you translate it to english when you are done? Thanks. --rogerd 16:50, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

I wrote the articel, please have a look. I will upload the german one tomorrow, because a friend is validating it. If he founds an error i will correct this articel too. Thanks for you assictance. If you have ane questions concerning german aviation, do not hessitate to ask at de:Portal:Luftfahrt. Broken English spoken perfectly ;-) -- Stahlkocher 17:11, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Looks good. I don't speak German, but I think you are saying that the 1300 is a 2600 with only one row of cylinders. Sometimes in English it is written as a "bank" of cylinders. I assume your friend is going to finish translating it into English. I can convert to United States customary units, and since the article is about a U.S. made product, I will list the the U.S. units first. --rogerd 20:23, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Your edit to Gordon Cooper

I reverted your edit to Gordon Cooper because you deleted more than half of the content of the page when you made your change using popups. I'm 99% sure it's a completely unintentional mistake, so this is just a reminder to check the preview first before hitting 'save.' Thanks - BaseballBaby 03:00, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I was doing a lot of disambiguation with popups, I hope there isn't a bug that messed up other pages I was working on. I tried it again (did the exact same thing) and it worked fine this time. Go figure. --rogerd 03:06, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Beatles News
Project News
  • New article classification system, for our use and for Wikipedia 1.0. Very important and we need editor involvement. How can you help? Rate articles! It's easy:
    • Visit Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Article Classification and read about how to grade.
    • Visit Category:Unassessed Beatles articles and select an article to review.
    • After deciding what grade it should have, modify the invocation of {{WPBeatles}} on the talk page to add parms. The template itself gives you the parameters to use. For example, change {{WPBeatles}} to {{WPBeatles|B|Low}} if you think it's a low-importance, B-class article. Save your changes and make sure the talk page is now showing the ratings.
    • Click on the link in the template to edit the /comments subpage and explain why you rated the article the way you did. Don't forget to sign with ~~~~. Save that too.
    • Questions? Ask Kingboyk or Lar for help.
  • Want to stay up on new project developments? Watchlist all of the WikiProject pages plus The Beatles and each of the 4 members, to get a feel for what's happening. Also monitor and regularly review Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/The Beatles articles by quality log. If an article is listed on there as "added", go check the article's history. If it's new since the Project began add it to the Project Log as a new article and up the counter by one :)

Issue of the Month

Preparing articles for inclusion in Wikipedia 1.0.

From the Editors

It was a bit of a struggle to get this month's newsletter done, as we did it without a lead editor. Hopefully, next month you'll jump in and be our lead editor. Big news is that WP:1.0 is coming along nicely and our article classification system has changed to conform to it.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 004 – August 2006). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Adolph Rupp

I haven't seen the movie either, and admit that passage gave me some pause (I almost wrote "his life"), so figured "career" was a compromise, not intending it to be necessarily literal, and figured someone could come along and tweak it (which, in a sense, you did). That's why WP is collaborative, I guess. Thanks for pointing that out; I've since fixed it.

And btw, despite your request on your page for visitors to sign their posts, you neglected to do so on my mine (D'Oh!) :-) Nightscream 05:39, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Editing

Hey there. I saw this yesterday;

"Aunt Bee falls for the sales pitch of a fast-talking medicine man (who is really a con) and his "Indian Elixir", which is really 85% alcohol! Aunt Bee has the women of the church's ladies' group to come over and indulge in the "elixir", which produces hilarious results!"

Granted, I know nothing about the show, but it seemed to me that there was something wrong with it, plus I haven't seen exclamation marks used widely in Wikipedia. Thanks for notifying me, I think I just screwed up eh? ;P Kedi the tramp 07:37, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Air transports of Heads of State (UK split)

Hi. Thanks for your comments, I just wanted to give you my perspective. I don't think all the information would fit well at No. 32 Squdron RAF for a couple of reasons.

  • It's primary function is support of the military, with VIP roles secondary.
  • The VIP role is very much a footnote of the squadron's history. It fought in the Battle of Britain, North Africa, Italy and Greece during World War II. It got its VIP role in February 1969 and merged with the Queen's Flight in 1995.
  • The air transport of the Royal family and executive of the UK is undertaken by the squadron but also by chartered planes (most often BA 777s) and even commerical flights. Regards Mark83 10:37, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

hello

Hi,

This person 68.127.150.215 keeps on writing personal comments on in the Muzaffarabad article, as well as in Lashkar-e-Toiba. I deleted yesterday comments he wrote, but he wrote them again today, so I deleted it again. He wrote other stuff as well on the latter article, but other people have been deleting it. Since I am not an admin. and you are, could you just warn him about vandalism, and what it is?

Thanks,

"Horribly obnoxious"...

Sweet Roger, thank you so much for your beautiful words - as usual, you're always there to support me... but what else can I expect from my older wiki-brother? ;) Seriously, hun, I wasn't sad, I merely was upset at the comment this person expressed on IRC. Unfortunately, it wasn't the first time I was criticized for my choice of words at the list of Missing Friends I have at my userpage, so that's why I'm not sure to keep it (few people realize they are adapted from a quote by Pope Benedict XVI regarding friendship). I know I am a tad too emotional by many people's standards, and that it's impossible to please everybody, so I'll just let the matter rest for a while and think what to do. Btw, I'm about to go on a very short vacation, so in case I don't see you before I go, have a great weekend, and I hope you're enjoying the summer! :) Take good care, my dear Roger, and my usual big hugs to you. Kisses, Phædriel tell me - 01:54, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 004 – August 2006

Issue of the Month

Despite it being the lead news article of last month, there is still help required in the assessing of articles and the migrating of comments. Lar is willing to provide assistance to those unsure how to do this.

Beatles News
  • The Beatles in the news. Suggestions: [2] [3]
Project News
  • The Beatles article, the "Flagship" of the Project, is currently under review with regard to its Featured Article status. It is hoped that the review will identify those areas that need some(/lots of) remedial work, and that the Project participants and those editors who are involved in the the FA admin pages to can work together to "save" the status of the article.
    • At the moment there is some discussion as to why it has been listed, and what may be needed to help it retain its FA status. It may well be that some work is going to be required in formulating a plan of action, and then some more in achieving those aims.
    • The FA status is obviously quite important to the Project, and it would be appreciated if participants are able to provide assistance in keeping the article up to standard. The editors would be grateful if those persons receiving this Newsletter could spare some of their time, energy and brainpower in keeping this jewel in our crown in its proper place. Please go to Wikipedia:Featured article review/The Beatles and get involved! Thank you.

It appears that now usingWikipedia files causes a problem. Not the same problem hat the copyright ssituatiion in SAC Aircraft and SAC missiles.

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

RE: Thanks

Dear rogerd:

Please accept my thanks for your labors cleaning up my failed attemtp to create two references during a revision to the entry for 'Jay Mariotti'. (Though I believe you were using the name 'Geffb' at the time.)

David Peterson 02:31, 23 August 2006 (UTC) (Chicago)

That wasn't me. I have never used any other id besides this one to edit on wikipedia. The only connection I have to User:Geffb is that I welcomed him back in January when he first edited under this name. What you are implying is called sock puppetry, and it is frowned upon here, and I certainly don't appreciate being accused of it. You are a fairly new user here, so I will consider this accusation to be an innocent mistake on your part.

RE: Quick Note for the Record

Dear rogerd:

No allegation of "sockpuppeting" was made toward you. I was trying to thank the invidual who corrected my errors (i.e., I couldn't figure out how to work the References command) for a revision I had introduced to an previous entry. So I checked the user-name of the person who made the correction, in the hope of thanking him. But somehow wound up on your user-talk page. Probably mistaking a comment by you for the other person.

Sockpuppeting is a problem, no doubt about it. But has nothing to do with my attempt to thank the person who corrected my error.

Project member Kingboyk said of the nomination, "I'm quite happy about it really, as I feel that GA is about where we're at and gives some incentive to work on the article."
  • We have a new category for Beatles articles needing attention. If you're looking for something to work on, the articles in this category and the subcategories need some TLC. To put an article in this category, tag its talk page with {{WPBeatles|attention=yes}}.
  • Kingboyk has given {{WPBeatles}} another major overhaul, and has assessed all of the Beatles articles. He would be grateful if other editors would leave comments on the state of articles, needed improvements and so on, by clicking the Comments link in the template. Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. Is the Indy 500 the largest one day sporting event?

This may just be a misunderstanding on my part, but surely the 1.1 to 1.6 billion estimated television audience for the 2002 World Cup Final (soccer) dwarfs the Indy 500? Maybe you don't count that as a one day event? Where do you get your source concerning this? I have found others which don't seem to include it at all as one of the biggest sporting events;

http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=34780

This article, based on worldwide TV figures in 2005, cites the Super Bowl (a one day event) as the biggest (93 million) followed by the Champions League Final (73 million) and then by the Canadian Grand Prix (53 million).

The 2004 television figures (without a World Cup Final) are as follows;

1. Football: Euro 2004 final Portugal v Greece 153 million 2. Olympic Games: opening ceremony 127 million 3. Olympic Games: closing ceremony 96 million 4. American football: Super Bowl 95 million 5. Olympic Games: men's 100m metres 87 million 6. Olympic Games: men's 200m freestyle swimming 66 million 7. Formula one: Monaco grand prix 59 million 8. Football: Champions League final Porto v Monaco 56 million 9. Basketball: NBA finals 25 million 10.= Tennis: Wimbledon women's singles final 21 million 10.= Tennis: Wimbledon men's singles final 21 million 12. Cycling: Tour de France final stage 16 million 13.= Football: FA Cup final Millwall v Man Utd 9 million 13.= Horseracing: Grand National 9 million 15. Rowing: University Boat Race 5 million

There is no mention of the Indy 500.

In fact, although no ball was kicked, 350 million watched the draw for the World Cup!

Although I don't doubt the interest the Indy 500 generates (otherwise I wouldn't have read the article!) I have to admit to doubt concerning your figures. If the SuperBowl generates 93 million viewers (98% of whom are from North America) how could the Indy 500 - which arguably (I admit I have no proof of this) generates less worldwide interest - draw in 320 million? If we were to apply the same percentage of the makeup of the worldwide TV audience as the SuperBowl, that would mean that EVERYBODY in the USA (pop. 290 million) and Canada (pop. 30 million) watches the Indy 500! One month old babies included!

On the other hand you can show me proof of what you say, I'll go to bed this evening quite happy in having learned something I didn't know. Your sincerely,

Thanks Roger

Hey Roger, thank you for supporting my recent RfA. It finished with an amazing final tally of 160/4/1. I really appreciate your comments and support. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 10:55, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Rvv on Conner Prairie

My mistake, Roger. I reverted after chasing around an anonymous user who was vandalizing pages, including Conner Prairie. I should have looked more closely at the subsequent revision that erased the vandalism. Johnbrownsbody 20:49, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know what the hell the link I listed as the source links to, but its really from here or here. I've fixed the source on Commons. Nominate away for featured picture. Desertsky85451 20:02, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter, Issue 6, October 2006

WikiProject The Beatles Newsletter
Issue 006 – October 2006

Beatles News
  • The site of the former Casbah Club, operated by Mona Best (mother of Pete) in the basement of her house, and where the nascent Beatles played and rehearsed, has been accorded Grade II Listed status following a recommendation by British Heritage.
Project News
  • Some Project articles are having their Featured Article status reviewed, and the comments are not encouraging. The articles are A Day in the Life and A Hard Day's Night (song). (She Loves You has already had its FA status revoked.) Please participate in the discussion and help improve the articles!
Member News
  • New members to the project since the last issue include I Am The Walrus and NaLaochra.
  • As usual, the self-effacing individuals who contribute to the Project are far too modest to mention any Barnstars or other awards they may have received. Obviously they feel their editing/contributing is reward enough.
Issue of the Month

The lead article of the Project recently lost its FA status, and now some of the other articles are being reviewed. Citations and references within articles are again the major concern. Contributors who have literature (books, magazines, links, etc.) are especially needed to provide the necessary citations. It is not enough for editors to know the facts; they need to be backed up by other sources. All help, both within the articles and the discussion, would be appreciated.

From the Editors

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 007 – November 2006). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!

Come back, Kingboyk! The children miss you!
