Police Constable Roger Valentine is a character in the long-running ITV drama The Bill. He joined the series in November 2004 and is played by John Bowler. His callsign is '275'.

[edit] Personal life and background

Roger first arrived in Sun Hill after a five-year abscence from the force. Roger is faithful in the fight to uphold law and order, but he also firmly believes the Met has become too soft and politically correct. His views are usually dismissed by most of his fellow colleagues, but occasionally frowned upon by some.

[edit] The Bombastic disaster and Roger's PTSD

Roger was present amongst many other uniformed officers in policing a gig at the Bombastic night club in March 2006 due to the tensions between Sun Hill police and the black community. Scuffles broke out between the police and clubgoers outside, prompting the decision of Acting Sergeant Yvonne Hemmingway to allow people inside the club. Due to severe overcrowding, an overhead balcony collapsed, and several people were crushed to death in their attempt to escape. As Roger and his colleague PC Lewis Hardy stayed behind to help firefighters and paramedics with the injured, an overhead lighting rig suddenly broke loose and fell. Roger managed to push Lewis aside but was knocked to the ground by the scaffolding.

Although he physically recovered, Roger was severely traumatised by the event. Eventually he was diganosed with Post-traumatic stress disorder and was sent on indefinite leave. He spent several months wishing he was dead but was never able to commit suicide.

Eventually he was discovered in hospital after a drinking binge. After being discharged he visited an off-licence which was under-siege. Roger seized on the opportunity to die and barred the robber's exit taunting him to shoot him. The robber complied with his wishes; however the gun malfunctioned and shot the robber.

Roger later broke down after realising he did not want to die. He is slowly on the road to rehabilitation.

[edit] Training

No information is available on the training that PC Valentine received or his length of service, however it is most likely that he did his training at Hendon. It is also unknown where PC Valentine did his probationary period. He previously served at Plaistow. He joined Sun Hill after a five-year break from the service.
