Rodrigo Mendoza is a fictional character in the movie The Mission written by Robert Bolt, who was portrayed by Robert De Niro.
He was a slave trader and mercenary, who killed his brother in a sudden duel. He isolated himself (he was untouchable by law, because his brother asked him a duel) before his meeting with Father Gabriel, who was building a mission to convert the Guarani tribe to Catholicism. Later he followed Father Gabriel to the mission, and became a Jesuit monk. At the end of the movie, he and other Jesuits, as well as most of the Guarani tribe, were slaughtered by a Portuguese invasion.
