Talk:Rock formation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A lot of the places listed are just to articles about places with no mention of the rock formation. Can we have more detail for each entry to describe why the formation is striking and what it is. 81.133.235.148 21:27, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Article merging/reshufling
There are three articles that overlap significantly
- Rock formation (I renamed it from Rock formations)
- Formation of rocks (I renamed it from Rock formation)
- Geologic formation, which basically speaks about rock formations.
IMO the third one must be merged into the firat one, unless there are non-rock formations techhically called "formations" as well (I am not a geologist)
Duplication between first and second ones must be minimized and the second one must be referred from the first one instead.

- The first (this article) is an informal list of popularily recognized rock appearances oe formations. It is a tourist guide to unusual or perhaps photogenic rock outcroppings. Rather ill-defined list of everyone's favorite scenic rock. Non-scientific.
- The second as now defined is an introductory lesson in the three main fields of petrology. Could be expanded as such - it is a science based article.
- The third is a more formal discussion of rock Formations as the basis of the science of stratigraphy.
- The three as now defined are distintly different articles and should not be merged. More work is needed to better flesh-out the articles and the popular list (this article) needs a better heading perhaps. Vsmith 04:49, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
