The campus, located at 308 S. Tillery Street, opened in September of 1953. The original mascot was the blackbird. In September of 1969, the school was merged with Booker T. Washington High School at the Tillery St. campus. The school mascot then became a Gryphon - pronounced grif-fon' (a mythical beast: half eagle, half lion - Booker T.'s mascot).
Rocky Mount High has had several successful athletic teams and has won nine NCHSAA state championships - the last one in 1982 (boys basketball).
It is currently a member of the NEW 6 3-A Athletic Conference.
The school has as a part of its curriculum the internationally-known International Baccalaureate (IB) program. The IB program is very rigorous; only a select few students achieve all the objectives of the program. The IB program is headed by Bonny Lee Tharrington Kane who is also the Teacher of the IB Theories of Knowledge class which uses texts by Woolman and Tony Stuart. The class also involves playing geography and Jeopardy games as well as reading pointless news articles. Bonny Lee Tharrington Kane is also the long time Treasurer for the IBSNC (IB schools of North Carolina). She also has many connections with the IB headquartes in Cardiff Wales.
