Rocking horse
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A rocking horse is a child's toy, shaped like a horse and mounted on rockers similar to a rocking chair.
Although considered today to be a child's toy, rocking horses date back to as early as 800, and in the 1400's through 1700's life-size rocking horses were used to assist new warriors to learn to do battle while upon a moving object, in preparation for battle on horseback (i.e.; jousting-style).
In the 1800's rocking horses became more commonly a 'child's toy.'
In 2006, the Guinness Book of World Records certified Cindy and Les Hartness of California as having the largest hand-carved wooden rocking horse on record. This rocking horse was built in 2000 and is 7 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 1,200 pounds. They can be found at renaissance faires throughout the country, where up to 4 adults can ride their rocking horse together at one time. At present, they have three of these giant rocking horses.
