Rockford Fosgate was one of the major players in the creation and development of the car audio industry. It is still a major brand.

Their major product is their amplifiers, although they also produce speakers, subwoofers and source-units such as CD headunits.

Rockford Fosgate amplifiers have historically been very successful in Auto-sound competitions because their power levels are usually under-rated. This gave a Rockford Fosgate user an advantage if they are competing in a "less than X wattage" category (e.g. <300 watt, <500 watt). Some older models of amplifiers can be run below their rated stable impedance to produce more power but still maintain their reliability.

Modern Rockford Fosgate amplifers have been criticized for not having their power levels under-rated to the same degree as older models. Some enthusiasts insist that the older Rockford Fosgate amplifiers are of higher quality and power, but Rockford denied this, maintaining that their current models are of the highest quality.
