Rochester is a village in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,149 at the 2000 census. The village is located within the Town of Rochester. The town has many older buildings, and many ghost stories come with the buildings, Chances, a restaurant/bar on the main strip, is said to be haunted. A painting within the restaurant is said to be painted by someone who never saw the place before he painted it, it also supposedly has a ghost figure in one of the upper windows. It is also rumored - without any credible evidence or basis in fact -- that there are tunnels under the Fox River, which were used by slaves in the underground railroad. The existence of such tunnels has never been proven; and the construction of any tunnels in the area at the time of the Underground Railroad would have been impossible.
