Airhitch® is a user-run, non-commercial system/method/process for hitchhiking on commercial airliners. Heavily dependent on the concept of peer self-help, it was started by a group of U.S. college students in the 1960s. People who travel in this way typically refer to themselves as "Airhitchers", and fit the description "on a budget, unstructured, and exploratory". Most Airhitchers fly between the United States and Western Europe. Before it migrated to Internet-based communication in the 1990s, it operated out of offices in New York, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Paris, and numerous other U.S., Canadian, and European cities, and had representatives on a number of U.S. and Canadian college campuses. Today virtually all exchange of information related to the system takes place on the Internet, via email, a website, and in an AIM chat room. In the chat room, primarily to facilitate and expedite information-flow, Airhitchers use their real names as they appear on their passports, while the staff use screen names like, e.g., Airhitch01, and Airhitch08, which are impersonal and interchangeable among individual staffers and groups of staffers. Airhitchers are invited to join the staff once they have completed the necessary training program, and while they are in the program they use screennames consisting of the string AOStrainee concatenated with a string that abbreviates their respective names and locations.

[edit] The Airhitching Process

[edit] Registration

Airhitchers formally commit to participation in the Airhitch system by sending an online registration to the staff, containing all information necessary for the staff to assist them in minimizing their cost and maximizing their freedom on the next trip they intend to take.

[edit] Flight-Briefing

With the guidance of the staff, Airhitchers explore the best possibilities for catching rides on flights and the procedural details of how to take advantage of them. Currently, these possibilities include the entire range of available possibilities including space-available and confirmed-seat arrangements.

[edit] Decision

Airhitchers decide which flight they will attempt to board, and take any action necessary in preparation for their boarding attempt.

[edit] Boarding

Airhitchers go to the airport and attempt to board the aircraft.
