Robots in Deus Ex

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The video game Deus Ex contains a wide variety of robotic units which can be extremely beneficial to the player, or a severe detriment, depending on the type and situation. Commonly robots are used strictly for security purposes, serving the role of "walking turrets". However, some specialized robots can be used for medical reasons and for recharging and repair. All robots in Deus Ex can be disabled by EMP Grenades, and can be infected by a nano-virus with Scrambler Grenades, which forces an enemy robot to attack its own allies for a period of time.

[edit] Weaponized Robots

Bots in this section are intended to see combat and are therefore equipped with weaponry, the common ordnance used by all three being the 7.62 mm round.

[edit] Small Security Bots

Mainly for personal use, the small security bot comes in two variations, both are which essentially (and mechanically) the same, although aesthetically different. Neither variations walk like the larger bots, instead running on wheels. Both carry a pair of automatic guns, are slow-moving, and with their limited AI, are used mainly by small organizations and terrorist groups. While it is never made clear (through in-game fluff) who manufactures them, it may be fair to assume that they are produced by Page Industries, as it is holds a monopoly on the robot market.

[edit] Page Bravo-3 Peacebringer

The Page Industries Bravo-3 Peacebringer, also known as the 'Walking Turret', or simply 'Security Bot,' is similar to the Delta-2, in that it is a bipedal security unit with radar sight and (fairly limited) AI. However it is significantly smaller at six feet in height, much more agile and less well-protected (The legs have exposed motive systems, in fact). Its only weapon is a single 7.62 mm gun below the chassis, relegating its use to small operations or supporting the Delta-2 models. Like all security robots, it cannot interact with an enemy, but can say set phrases: 'Scanning Area', 'Target Acquired' and 'Target Lost.' Unlike the others, its phrases are spoken very quickly and in a muffled tone, making it difficult to hear. The first robot encountered in the game is a Bravo-3 Peacebringer (not counting the training mission where a small security bot is found first).

[edit] Page Delta-2 Peacebringer

The Page Industries Delta-2 Peacebringer, also known as the 'Military Bot', is the largest, most powerful and most deadly Security Bot in the game. It is equipped with a pair of inward-sunken 7.62 mm gatling guns, two multi-shot rocket launchers, and the thickest armour of any robot in the game. When on patrol, it walks a set route, stopping every 10 yards (approximately) to scan its surroundings for enemies, during which it says 'Scanning Area' and swings its upper assembly to do so. Because of it size and capabilities, the Delta-2 is only used by the military and government organizations. However, its size makes it slow moving, and therefore an easy target under most circumstances. The smaller Bravo-3 model often supports the Delta-2 with their increased speed and manoeuvrability.

The weight of the Delta-2, although never specified, can be inferred as considerable: The ground shakes whenever one is on the move.

[edit] Matsu-Gravas R-118 Repair Robot

Found in many industrial areas, in game text discloses that the R-118 is characteristic of all bots of Matsu-Gravas' M-G repair line, and is used for a variety of repair, maintenance, and construction tasks. The R-118 is also described as being equipped with a Kroya 'Searchlight 3' argon laser attached to its M-G IRL arm, Chiang optics and visual processing, a self-recharging bioelectric battery, wireless command control, and 16 GB of internal memory (for "a superior amount of task customization at an affordable price"). In addition, the R-118 adheres to Matsu-Gravus LITE standard adopted by most other robotics companies, which allows all such repair bots to act as mobile rechargers.

It is this last ability that is the only one of use to the player, as the R-118 is only used within the game for recharging Bioelectrical Energy (BE) used for powering augmentations. Also, as with the M-G 'Nightingale' Med Bot, the R-118 requires a sixty-second power-up interval after each recharge.

[edit] Matsu-Gravas GV-4 'Nightingale' Medical Robot

Found in clinics and the UNATCO base, the Medical Robot, or Med Bot for short, can heal up to 300 hit points around the body in a single use. They can also be used for installing nano-augmentations to the player, when an augmentation canister is provided. In game text reveals that the medical bot industry is monopolized by Page Industries, however, the Matsu-Gravas is the only type of Med Bot encountered in the game.

[edit] Spider Robots

Although Spider Robots, or 'Spider Bots' for short, walk on only six legs, they are obviously physically similar to a spider in many ways. They come in two sizes: the larger of the two being about as large as a military bot. Spider Bots have two uses. In large industrial areas, they are used for repairing electrical systems, by shooting bolts of electricity at malfunctioning electrical components. However, they can shoot these bolts of electricity at the player, causing damage and often death. The Big Spider Robots can be seen in Deus Ex only three times: first time during the return to the Versalife facility in Hong Kong (underneath the globe), the second time in the OceanLab on the UC room (near the lift to the Computer); third time in Area 51 before entering on the Page Zone.

[edit] Cleaner Robots

Cleaner Robots are small agile robots that clean commercial areas. Standing about 1 foot tall, Cleaner Robots are vaguely boot shaped and serve little purpose, aside from their aesthetic benefit to the office and industrial environments in which they are found. They notably flee when the player approaches, as just stepping on them is enough to cause damage. Like the other robots, they violently explode when they are damaged too badly. They also damage the player in exploding.
