Robin Squire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robin Clifford Squire (b. 12 July 1944) is a British politician. He was the Conservative Party's MP for Hornchurch from 1979 until 1997 when he lost it to John Cryer.

He was educated at Tiffin Grammar School, Kingston Upon Thames and worked as an accountant for several Lombard practises, as well as becoming a National Lottery commissioner in 1999.

He served as an under-secretary of state for education from 1993 to 1997 under John Patten and Gillian Shephard. As an education minister, he barked down some of the more extreme proposals to deal with the threat of school shootings after Dunblane.

Robin stood against John Cryer at the 2001 election, losing again by a similar margin. Cryer was defeated narrowly in 2005 by the Conservative candidate James Brokenshire.
