[edit] Brief Biography
Sabuda was born in Pinckney, Michigan. He was skilled as an artist from a very young age, and attended the Pratt Institute in New York City. While at Pratt, an internship at Dial Books for Young Readers whetted his interest in children's book illustration. Initially working as a package designer, Sabuda illustrated his first children's book, The Fiddler's Son, in 1988. Wide recognition only came his way after he started designing pop-up books for children in 1994. [2]
He has experimented with modes of illustration in a conventionally conservative genre, using techniques like faux stained glass (Arthur and the Sword [3] ), batik (Blizzard's Robe [4] ), papyrus-textured illustrations (Tutankhamen's Gift [5] ) and murals (Saint Valentine [6] ).
Sabuda presently works from his studio in New York City with his partner Matthew Rheinhardt, holds workshops with children and is involved in projects to discover child artists and paper artists. He has also released a video of his working style.
Sabuda has thrice been awarded the Meggendorfer Prize (the prize instituted in honor of Lothar Meggendorfer) of the Movable Book Society (MBS) of America.
