Robert Livingston (1718-1775)

Robert R. Livingston (1718-1775) was a prominent politician, and the leading Whig in New York in his day. He was the son of Robert Livingston (1688-1775) of Clermont and grandson of Robert Livingston (1654-1728); he was the father of Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813). He married Margaret Beekman, heir to immense tracts of land in Dutchess and Ulster counties. {She was the niece of the wife of Gilbert Livingston, son of Robert Livingston (1654-1728)}
He was a member of the provincial assembly from 1759 to 1768. He served as judge of the admiralty court from 1760 to 1763 and as justice of the colonial supreme court in 1763. He was a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress of 1765, and, in 1775, a member of the Committee of One Hundred, which briefly governed New York City.
He died at his estate in Clermont, New York, December 9, 1775.

- A third daughter Alida Livingston was married to Congressman John Armstrong Jr son of General and Congressman John Armstrong.
- One son, Henry Beekman Livingston, married Nancy Shippen, a daughter of Continental Army Medical Directer William Shippen Jr and Alive Lee-a sister of Congressman Arthur Lee; {their first cousin once removed was Continental General Henry Lee}. Nancy was a granddaughter of Congressman William Shippen and a great-granddaughter of Pennsylvania Governor Edward Shippen; Nancy Shippen was also a first cousin of Peggy Shippen, wife of Benedict Arnold. A relative of Peggy Shippen was Mary Willing Byrd.
- Another son John Robert Livingston married to Eliza McEvers. Parents of Serena Elzia Livingston married to Colonel George Croghan (soldier) of Locust Grove Kentucky, the War of 1812 hero of Fort Sandusky Ohio and a nephew of General George Rogers Clark. Colonel Croghan not to be confused with the New York trader George Croghan.
