Robert Enke

Robert Enke (* 24 August 1977 in Jena) is a German footballer, who plays as a goalkeeper.

[edit] FC Carl Zeiss Jena

Enke started his career with FC Carl Zeiss Jena during the 95/96 season in the 2. Fußball-Bundesliga where he played in three matches.

[edit] Borussia Mönchengladbach

He then went on to become Germany's biggest goalkeeping talent at Borussia Mönchengladbach. There he took advantage of his opportunities and was soon chosen for Germany. He stayed with Mönchengladbach for three seasons. After Rainer Bonhof brcsmr manager he became the first choice goalkeeper.

For the 99/00 season Enke transferred to Benfica in Portugal. His career continued to flourish under the tutilage of Jupp Heynckes and he was made captain. Enke also played three seasons in Lisbon.

[edit] FC Barcelona

For the 02/03 season he moved to the Spanish Primera División with FC Barcelona. Barcelona became aware of him while he was at Benfica and decided to move for him, however while at Barcelona he did not enjoy much playing time. He was only the second choice goalkeeper and mainly warmed the bench.

[edit] Fenerbahçe Istanbul

One year later (03/04 season) he was loaned to Fenerbahçe in Turkey who had a German manager, Christoph Daum. After his first game which they lost 0:3 against İstanbulspor, Enke was pelted with firelighters and bottles by his own fans. He could not stand the pressure for the fans and left Fenerbahçe in August 2003.

In January 2004 Enke moved to the Spanish Segunda División with CD Tenerife. While there he won acclaim from the club, the fans and also regained admirers in Germany.

Hannover 96 signed Enke for the 04/05 season where he has continued to stay. In December 2006 Enke signed a contract extension with Hannover 96 until the end of the 09/10 season.

Enke made his international debut for the Germany national football team in a friendly against Denmark on 28 March 2007.

Robert Enke is married to Teresa Enke and had a daughter, Lara, who passed away on September 17th, 2006 due to a birth defect.Robert Enke is involved with his wife in the animal right campaign. He has lent his face to the PETA campaign against the fur industry. He is especially against the use of cat and dog pelts from China.
