Robert Diamond

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Edward "Bob" Diamond, Jr. (born Springfield, Massachusetts, July 27, 1951) is an American banker who is currently a main board director of Barclays PLC, the third largest British-based banking group, with the titles of President, Barclays PLC, and CEO, investment banking and investment management.

One of seven children, Diamond was raised in Concord, Massachusetts and was selected as an All-State Linebacker. He attended Colby College in Maine, majoring in Economics and pledging the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, and got his MBA from the University of Connecticut Business School, graduating first in his class. He worked for Morgan Stanley in New York before taking a job as head of the government bond division in London. In 1992 he was appointed head of Asian operations by Credit Suisse First Boston and moved, with his family, to Japan, and subsequently to Greenwich, Connecticut.

In 1997, Diamond once again moved to London with his family after he was offered the position of Chief Executive at BZW ( Barclays der Zoete Wedd ) - soon to be rebranded Barclays Capital.

Diamond is known for his sportsmanlike leadership style, running his business as a meritocracy, something that ran very much against the old boys club style of many of London's financial institutions. Since joining Barclays he has also taken control of the bank's wealth management and fund management (Barclays Global Investors) divisions.

He joined the bank's board on June 1 2005, as executive director and President of Barclays PLC.[1]

He is known as one of Britain's highest-paid workers, collecting a package worth up to £27m in 2006, and holding Barclays shares worth £65m.[2]
