Robert C. Byrd Institute
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing (RCBI) is an independent program administered by Marshall University. It provides access to computer numerical control (CNC) equipment for businesses in West Virginia and Western Maryland.
The mission of RCBI is to "develop a quality, just-in-time (JIT) supplier base for the Department of Defense (DoD) and the commercial sector" by providing statewide and regional access to advanced technology and technical training to small and medium sized companies. RCBI is continually stiving to improve and transform regional industries through the science of higher productivity and application of Kaizen manufacturing philosophy; thus providing a solid foundation for a new generation of technological innovation to flourish.

[edit] Resources
CNC equipment provided by the RCBI facities includes:
Electrical Discharges Machines (EDM) for machining hard metals such as titanium or extremely hard steel or other exotic metals. |
CNC Milling Machines for the complex shaping of parts. Milling machines can perform a vast number of complex operations, such as slot cutting, planing, drilling, rebating, and routing. |
Water Jet Cutters a tool capable of slicing into metal or other materials using a jet of water at high velocity and pressure, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. |
CNC Turning Centers (and Swiss Turning Centers: a type of turning center that was first developed for the Swiss watch industry. These machines are designed to turn small, complex, precision parts.) |
