An interesting myth exists about this photograph. According to this myth, during the afternoon of August 24, 1942, the Japanese attacked the U.S.S. Enterprise. As a third bomb exploded on the deck, Photographer Mate 3d Class Robert Fredric Read is said to have taken this photo. Actually, Read was already dead at the time this photograph was taken.
