Since 1838, the Office of the Sheriff has served Roanoke County, Virginia as the original law enforcement agency. [1]
The current Sheriff is Gerald S. Holt was first elected in 1992.

The Office of the Sheriff was formed in 1838 with the creation of Roanoke County out of the southern part of Botetourt County. The Roanoke County Sheriff's Office was a full service department until 1990 when The Roanoke County Police was created. The Sheriff's Office now runs the Roanoke County / Salem Jail and the Roanoke County Courthouse.
Two Deputies have lost their lives in the line of duty: Deputy Sheriff Clifford Louis Johnson in 1927 and Deputy Sheriff Clarence Edward Simmons in 1936. [2]
In August of 2000 the Roanoke County Jail attained national accredition from the American Correctional Association. [3]

Currently, the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office has 118 sworn and civilian employees. [1]
Due to overcrowding a serveral local jails Franklin County, Montgomery County, Roanoke County and the City of Salem have gotten together to build a new jail. This shared facility has been named the Western Regional Jail authority and will be built in the Dixie Caverns area of Roanoke County in 2008. [4]
