[edit] History

Rivier college was founded in 1933 by the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, and is named in honor of the blessed Anne Marie Rivier founderess of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. Originally founded in Hudson, New Hampshire, the college was moved in 1941 to its current location in Nashua, New Hampshire.

In 1995, in anticipation of the 1996 bicentennial of the founding of the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, the college formally recommitted to Anne Marie Rivier's mission of teaching and serving the poor by making social justice and service to others a special focus of its work.

Rivier is a fully accredited institution enrolling approximately 2,200 students in two schools: the School of Undergraduate Studies (which includes an Evening Division) and the School of Graduate Studies. For the purpose of institutional cooperation, Rivier College is a member of the New Hampshire College and University Council, a consortium of institutions of higher learning; students of member institutions are permitted to register for transfer credit at any of the member colleges except Dartmouth College.

The college offers a wide variety of clubs and activities to choose from. As of 2006, Rivier's chapter of Habitat for Humanity had been recognized with awards for excellence and involvement in the greater Nashua community. Many clubs on campus are organized in conjunction with the different liberal arts majors. For example, there is a History club to go with the History major, there is a Social and Behavioral Sciences Club for psychology and sociology majors, a Fine Arts Society for art majors, etc. Students typically join clubs based on what their undergraduate education focuses on, but club membership is open to any interested student with a desire to get involved. The number of student clubs and activities fluctuates based on student involvement or apathy. Club funding is delineated through the school's Student Government Association.

As of 2006, the largest major at Rivier is education, which comprises 30% of the undergraduates, while the second largest major is nursing, which comprises 26% of the undergraduates.
