[edit] History of Riverstone International School

[[1997:]] Hidden Springs Community School (the former name of Riverstone International School) opened its doors. The School was founded by businessman Jim Grossman, Sam Hazard, and a group of dedicated parents. The goal was to provide students in grades K through 12 with a quality, independent education in the Treasure Valley. The School opened its doors in a refurbished farmhouse in the Dry Creek Valley, just northwest of Boise. In its first year, the school enrolled 57 students in grades K through 8.

[[1998:]] The School’s enrollment continued to climb and grade 9 was added. Enrollment in the Lower School continued to increase.

[[1999:]] The School attempted to add a tenth grade. At the end of the year it was determined that the school would remain at grades K through 9.

[[2000:]] Hidden Springs Community School moved from its Dry Creek Valley location to Harris Ranch in southeast Boise, next to the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. The school officially changed its name to RiverStone Community School. Enrollment in grades K through 9 reached 110. The School was housed in an old Forest Service Building and two full-size and one half-size modular buildings.

[[2001:]] In March, the current Head of School, Joe Kennedy, was appointed. In the fall of 2001 enrollment had increased to 130 in grades K through 9. The campus increased in size by leasing more acreage from the Harris Family and adding an additional full-sized modular building. In October 2001, Mr. Kennedy successfully completed the accreditation of RiverStone Community School through the Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges and Universities (NASCU). This allowed the school to become accredited with the State of Idaho. In November of 2001, the School approached the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) to seek accreditation through their organization and expected to become accredited in the 2003–2004 school year.

[[2002:]] In May, RiverStone negotiated the purchase of the 2.41-acre parcel on which it currently resides. In addition to the land purchase, the School also negotiated an option on the adjacent 11.2 acres. RiverStone’s enrollment for the 2002–2003 school year was 170 students in grades K through 10. The School dedicated itself to completing a full Upper School with a college preparatory curriculum culminating with the International Baccalaureate Diploma in the final two years of high school. In 2002, five RiverStone families and two local families stepped forward to host seven international exchange students in an effort to globalize the school and set the stage for the IB program. International students came from Russia, Thailand, Germany, Brazil, Spain, Chile, and Colombia. In the future, RiverStone Community School anticipates that 30% of its enrollment in the Upper School will be international students.

[[2003:]] The school procured the option on the 11.2 acres, thereby expanding the campus property holdings to 13.2 acres. In August 2003, the school broke ground on a new 11,000 square-foot elementary school building that was completed in November and houses K-5 classrooms, a small auditorium, and classrooms for art, music, and Spanish. The school's enrollment increased to 224 students in grades K through 11, of which 19 were from other countries including Austria, Chile, France, Germany, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Spain, Thailand, and Vietnam.

[[2006:]] The school changed its name to Riverstone International School. The school's enrollment increased to 270 students. The school also began construction of a gymnasium that completed on December 22, 2006.
