[edit] History
The first naming of this area was claimed to be Richville after an original 1890's homesteader of this name. The next naming was Riverdale, then Riversdale. [4] Meridian. On January 16, 1905 Riversdale was incorporated as a village of 100 persons, and in 1906 it amalgamated with the towns of Saskatoon and Nutana to form the City of Saskatoon. For many years, Riversdale was separated from the rest of Saskatoon by the CNR railyards, necessitating the construction of well-used wooden walkways over the tracks for pedestrians and vehicular underpasses. Most of these connectors were removed when the railyards were removed from downtown Saskatoon in the 1960s, although one underpass on 19th Street remained in use until it was demolished in 2005.
Riverdale's main commercial district is along 20th Street West, which is known for its cultural diversity. The southeast corner of the community originally housed the A.E. Cole power plant, which was demolished in the 1980s; today the site is part of the River Landing redevelopment project.
