River Plate Football Club, was a sports club from Uruguay, founded in Montevideo, the country´s capital.
The club reached important achievements in the amateur era of uruguayan football. In fact, Uruguay national football team uniform is a sky blue shirt in tribute to this team victory with a sky blue shirt over argentina´s Alumni. After the second decade of the twentieth century, the club entered in ostracism and disappeared.
[edit] The container River Plate
It is said that both uruguayan and argentine "rivers" clubs took name from a (mistakenly named) container of a ship that went both to Montevideo and Buenos Aires ports. The ship had the inscription "river plate" in several containers, referring to the "Río de la Plata" river. The fact is that the literal translation to spanish of river plate is "plato del río",nothing to do with "silver river" or "river of the silver",the correct traduction of the original name.
