River Ore

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The River Ore is a wide tidal estuary river in Suffolk, England. It is a river with a split personality, having only one bank -- the Southern and Western bank are of the Ore giving Orford its name, whilst on the Northern and Eastern bank, the river is known as the River Alde giving Aldeburgh its name. Continuing in this oddity of naming, The River Butley is a tributary of the Ore, but not regarding as feeding the Alde, even though they are the same watercourse.

The river passes mainly through marshland and shingle or sand beaches, most of which is now owned by the National Trust as the "Orford Ness National Nature Reserve". Before the National Trust took ownership of this land, it was the site of a secret military base where tests with radar were carried out during the Cold War.
