[edit] History
The land which is now River Heights was once part of the Parish of St. Boniface. It was annexed by the City of Winnipeg in 1882 though substantial development did not occur in the area until after World War I.
It was traditionally an Anglo-Saxon Protestant area, though today the area has a more diverse population and a concentration of Jews, who make up 11% of the neighbourhood's population. The Jewish population lives primarily in the south end of the neighborhood, due to the presence of a number of synagogues, Ohr HaTorah Day School and Jewish community organizations and businesses in that area.
River Heights, along with much less affluent Fort Rouge, comprised the South End of the old City of Winnipeg. It was these areas which contributed the majority of the men and the money to form the Citizens Committee of 1000, the group which broke the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919.
[edit] Demographics
Wellington Crescent, as it is known to many in Winnipeg, is home to many prominent Winnipeg families. Though some locals consider the area to be affluent, it is characterized largely by a wide range of middle- to upper-middle income households. The Crescent is an admirable and very beautiful road, famous for the spring and summertime joggers down the path. Some of Winnipeg's wealthiest families, live on the street.
