River Glen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are at least five rivers called Glen:
- River Glen, Lincolnshire, England
- River Glen, Northumberland, England
- Glen Water, Ayrshire, Scotland
- Glen River, Quebec, Canada
- Glen River, Donegal, Ireland
An earlier form of the name, in the UK was Glein. The UK river names are likely derive from the same Brythonic source as the modern Welsh glân, meaning clean. Another Welsh word, glan, meaning shore, seems to derive from the same root, using the idea of a strip of ground kept clean of vegetation by wave or tidal action.
