IMDb profile

Tales From the Crypt Presents: Ritual is the third film spin-off from the HBO television series Tales from the Crypt, the first being Demon Knight and the second being Bordello of Blood. It stars Tim Curry, Jennifer Grey and Craig Sheffer. A third Crypt movie was planned on the release of Bordello, but due to the low box office take in on the film, the third movie was cancelled.[citation needed] This movie, originally released for foreign countries in 2001, was not released in the US until May 2, 2006 on DVD. The film originally had nothing to do with Tales from the Crypt and didn't have the bookend Cryptkeeper segments.[citation needed] When the film did poorly in theaters, however, special Cryptkeeper segments were filmed for the US release with John Kassir reprising his role as the Cryptkeeper.[citation needed]

[edit] Plot

A doctor (Jennifer Grey) gets her medical license revoked and is fired from her job after the death of a patient. After being fearful of a patient's words of voodoo cults, she travels to Jamaica. There, she realizes that she, and her patient, are the target of a voodoo cult.

[edit] Reception

In the US, the film was released to general disappointment by Tales from the Crypt fans.[citation needed] The film was seen as an inferior remake of I Walked with a Zombie.[citation needed] The biggest point of criticism, however, were the Cryptkeeper segments, which fans felt were tacked on and cheaply made.[citation needed] The fact that the puppet was a completely new, Jamaican-esque incarnation of its well known counterpart (which was used to fit in with the fact that the movie takes place in Jamaica) angered fans as well.[citation needed]
