Rippowam High School in Stamford, CT opened in the fall of 1963 as the second high school in the city. It was named after the Native American tribe which occupied the area. A minor river named the Rippowam runs from the northern part of Stamford, southerly into Long Island sound, a distance of about 5 miles. Rippowam High School is the alma mater of Bobby Valentine, who played for several Major League Baseball teams (drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers), later managed the New York Mets, and currently manages the Chibe Lotte Marines of Japanese Baseball.
