[edit] History

It is claimed that the school was originally founded in Saxon times, it was re-founded in 1555 during the reign of Queen Mary. The school became coeducational in the 1960s. Although most pupils are day-pupils from Ripon itself, there are attached, separate, boys and girls boarding houses.

Ripon was the first school catchment area in England in which parents voted to keep a selective school in 2000.[3]

During 2005, Ripon Grammar celebrated their 450th Anniversary from their 1555 re-founding. During this year, extensive fundraising occurred, which is now being spent on many new projects to improve the school's facilities. One of the most ambitious being the building of a new classroom block, and another being the refurbishment of at least four science labs.

In January 2006 the school was awarded engineering status, which will help fund the improvement of facilities in the science and technology departments. This was largely due to the efforts of current headmaster Martin Pearman.
