Rip Sewell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Truett Banks (Rip) Sewell (May 11, 1907 - September 3, 1989) was a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball, known to be one of the greatest "junk" pitchers. He is credited with inventing the eephus pitch. He batted left handed and threw right handed.

A native of Decatur, Alabama, Sewell entered the major leagues at the age of 25, however, playing only one season with the Detroit Tigers. After six years he returned to the major leagues, this time for the Pittsburgh Pirates with whom he would end his career.

Sewell died in Plant City, Florida, at the age of 82.
