Riolu (リオル Rioru?) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Riolu is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Riolu in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[1]

Riolu's name is a pun on Lucario, the name of its evolution.

[edit] Biological characteristics

Riolu resembles a small, black-and-blue-skinned, bipedal canine such as a fox or coyote. It is similar in appearance to its evolution, Lucario, but the blades on its wrists are less defined and stunted.

Much like its evolved form, Riolu is able to manipulate aura fields. However, it isn't as adept at using them as Lucario. It usually uses the aura fields to call for friends when it is lonely, sad, or hurt. It also has impressive stamina, as it is able to cross three mountains and the two valleys between them in a single night.

[edit] In the video games

Riolu is only available from an in-game event. Riley, a man who resembles Sir Aaron from Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, gives the player an egg containing Riolu.

Riolu evolves into Lucario when it levels up during the day and its happiness level is at the maximum.

Riolu have one of two abilities: Inner Focus or Steadfast. Its Inner Focus ability prevents it from flinching, while its Steadfast ability raises its Speed when it does flinch.
