Rightmove plc trading as Rightmove.co.uk (LSE: RMV) is an online British property search company.
[edit] The Company
Rightmove.co.uk was created in 2000 as a joint venture between four of the UK's largest property agents: Halifax, Countrywide Assured, Royal & Sun Alliance, & Connells. However, in March 2006 the Company was listed on the London Stock Exchange (although the original founders retained approximately 80% of the shares). As of 2006, it has 78% of the property search market and is the 9th most visited UK website.
Rightmove.co.uk Limited was formed on the 11 August 2000, changing name to Rightmove PLC on the 14 February 2006.
[edit] Operations
Rightmove makes money from listing estate agents on its website. Individuals selling property privately (i.e. directly without an agent) are prohibited from advertising on the site. Access is free for viewers, who are capable of both finding properties, subscribing to search results, as well as requesting further information and arranging viewings.
As of September, 2006 there were 2.4m registered users, over 855,000 properties listed (This figure includes those properties 'Sold Subject to Contract,' although the number of properties for sale may be lower) and 34 million searches were made (again their claim).[1]
