Welcome to Wikipedia! Your articles and edits are very helpful and appropriate; keep up the good work! --Merovingian ↕ Talk 22:38, Apr 25, 2004 (UTC)
Hi there. When you create article on fictional subjects, could you please make sure to label them as fictional, and explain what they come from? Thanks, Isomorphic 23:12, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Nero Claudius Drusus
Hey, where did you get all that info about Augustus? I've never heard of that before...seems like it should give a source, at the very least. Adam Bishop 05:16, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I'll get a source by the end of the week. It's something of a contested theory; we're pretty sure that Augustus had Wilson's disease (as did the other Julio-Claudians); it's still hotly debated as to the validity of the link; i.e. records don't survive well so we don't know if Wilson's disease was actually very common among Roman aristocracy because of aristorcratic inbreeding; it it wasn't common, Augustus could have been the father. In the event that it was very common among Roman elite (who intermarried all the time) he might not have, but we don't have many records of other Roman elite. I'll read the paper I found it in again and check on this.---Ricimer

[edit] Babar_the_Elephant
I deleted your paragraph about the pronunciation of Babar - LdB pronounces it Babar ( NPR Story ).
[edit] Rohirrim
Dear Ricimer, you insist on having this paragraph on the Rhohirrim:
- Many aspects of Rohan's culture and history seem to be inspired by the medieval Anglo-Saxons. Tolkien was a great expert in the Anglo-Saxon language and one of the definative authorities on the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf. Beowulf was based on ancient oral tradition which originated long before the ancestors of the Anglo-Saxons left mainland Europe to invade England. There are many similarities between Rohan and Beowulf; King Theoden is much like King Hrothgar, and Meduseld matches the description of the mead-hall Heorot. - The Rohirrim have been described by the Lord of the Rings film adapation production team as "Beowulf with horses". Tolkien was a great lover of the Anglo-Saxon culture of England, which was swept away by the Norman invasion's triumph at the Battle of Hastings. A key factor in the Norman victory over the Anglo-Saxons was that they had mounted warriors, which the Anglo-Saxons lacked. The Rohirrim can be seen as a fantastic re-imagining by Tolkien of Anglo-Saxon culture, with the addition of a "rider-culture" element that may have allowed the Anglo-Saxon culture to defeat the Normans, and survive and thrive through history.
First of all, Beowulf is based on events that happened in Scandinavia 50-100 years after the Anglo-Saxons arrived in England and Tolkien knew that full well. Moreover, the film adaptation team insisted on depicting the Rohirrim as Vendel Age Swedish warriors making them "Vikings on horseback" as you can hear Peter Jackson call the Rohirrim on the the "making of" films in the extended editions. I have so many times heard English nationalists state that the Rohirrim are Anglo-Saxons that I am tired of it. The only thing that you can trace to the Anglo-Saxons in the Rohirrim is that he represented their language with Anglo-Saxon.--Wiglaf 12:02, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
PS, the theme of Rohan was even played with a Norwegian Hardinger fiddle, and the Rohirrim buildings were based on the Norwegian Stavkirker.--Wiglaf 12:14, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Beowulf
Now, Ricimer, I am soon going to revert your last edit. Let me just tell you that Tolkien did not ONLY read Beowulf. Tolkien read the Norse sagas, and he was especially fond of the Fornaldarsagas. Unlike you, he did not consider the Anglo-Saxon language and culture to be different from the Old Norse culture and language. In fact, he considered them to be one and the same. I suggest you read first read this article :J. R. R. Tolkien and then you read this article by Shippey Tolkien and Iceland: the Philology of Envy. Tom Shippey's lecture at the University of Iceland. I can assure you that I am familiar with Tolkien's sources.--Wiglaf 28 June 2005 19:34 (UTC)
[edit] Cylon
This is ridiculous. The least you could do is move things properly. I've done a proper move and turned Cylon into a disambiguation page. There is no justification for redirecting it to the Battlestar Galatica characters; I don't even think there is justification for moving the real person, but I'll concede that to you. Adam Bishop 23:13, 22 September 2005 (UTC)

- I reverted your note regarding Lucy Lawless bumping up to supporting cast -- she won't do that until the beginning of season three, according to release information from SciFi; your changing her status is a bit premature (and potentially a spoiler). Mhking 04:57, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Criticism of naturalistic science fiction
Hey, Ricimer. You were probably right to remove the "Criticism" section from Naturalistic science fiction, as it was unsourced and thus original research. But you're wrong in saying that there's been no widespread criticism of this movement (in particular, as seen in the new BSG). Although I personally think that the new BSG has some great drama in it, and is vastly superior to something like Voyager, I've seen a consistent undercurrent of criticism from older science-fiction fans saying that it's just too angst-ridden and too grounded in the grim-and-gritty version of reality — in short, the very criticisms that were in the section you removed.
That said, we can't just insert unsourced opinions into an article, so you were right to remove it. I don't have the time or inclination to do the research right now, but I hope that someone can find some legitimate sources from notable old-school science fiction fans, so that a properly verifiable "Criticism" section can be added. Without it, the article leans too strongly towards the pro-Moore POV. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 05:07, 7 December 2005 (UTC)
- Well, I removed it because of its extreme non-POV problems, unresearched nature (I mean is there an article or something they can link?); I removed the whole thing, but I DID say in my edit reason that I was open to someone else writing one that was NPOV, and wouldn't mind it's just that I obviously SUPPORT it so I'm not the one to write it. --Ricimer 17:05, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

-
- Yeah, I realize that. I just thought your edit summary was a bit over-the-top in its intensity, that's all. No biggie. As I said, I like the new BSG too — I think it's objectively a much better show than the original — I'm just interested in retaining some balance in the article. (You may notice on the talk page that I removed a much more POV "Criticism" section earlier — that was pure message-board vitriol, unlike Mr. Atoz's recent attempt.) —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 17:52, 8 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cylon God article
I created the article on the pretense(??) that it would be either about the real cylon God (RDM noted in his podcast of "Kobol's Last Gleaming, Part II", that the original ending of Season One called for actor Dirk Benedict to appear to Baltar on Kobol and introduce himself as "God". Numerous prohibiting factors prevented this storyline from making it on camera, chief among them was Moore's confessed inabillity to write a feasible conclusion to the surprise revalation at the time. Another mitigating factor which influenced Moore to drop the idea was that when he revealed his idea to the other writers, the entire writing team found the idea simply revolting, so Moore acquiesced.) or that it would be about the use of the word "God" in the 2003 series. - SGCommand
- Well....by your own admission, that was never "in the script". It was a funny idea Ron Moore had and kind of liked and included in his personal drafts of it, but the instant he mentioned it to the other writers he quickly dropped it. No, it was never "part of the original script" so much as it was "a funny idea Ron Moore was tossing around". On top of this at first Moore wasn't sure if they'd get picked up for another season or not and was thinking of a fun way to end the series. In short, the article should be deleted. --Ricimer 11:00, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
- Lucy Lawless said that she will play the God next season. I personally believe that the article should stay. If it should stay by chance, how many users do you reckon will contribute to the article? - SGCommand
Sorry to butt into this conversation as a third party - but, from what I heard, Dirk Benedict turned down requests to appear in the new show, unlike Hatch who was overwhelmingly interested in returning (albeit not as Apollo). Supposedly Dirk is recovering from cancer and retired from acting - I don't know what his current state of health is. I also heard a rumor he turned down a role he would have played in a movie remake of "A-Team" that is being planned as well.
About the Cylon God issue - This is the first time I heard of it. I thought the Cylon "God" was spiritual - and not supposed to be played by a character. I heard Moore was considering bringing back the "Ships of Light" which were angellic figures that appeared in the original BSG series, and going back to the story of Starbuck befriending a Cylon. This also happened in the orginal series with Dirk's Starbuck. Last I heard these ideas were still on the table, but not confirmed. I think any info on the Cylon God is just fan-speculation at this point. Cyberia23 23:08, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
First: Lucy's character will *come to believe* that she is God, from the report, but she's not the actual God. That is, when we saw her in season 2 she didn't think she was "God", she wasn't. She thinks she's God's avatar or something. But there's really no "man behind the curtain", like Oz, who fooled Cylons into thinking they had claims to having a soul and religion and such. The idea is that anything sentient thinks of stuff like that. Secondly, a lot of people get confused by this from the way it's been worded (plus on some messageboards people shout "Benedict was going to play God!" etc because they're fans of his) but really no; Ron Moore explains it in the podcast for the season one finale: It was an idea *Moore was tossing around half-seriously*, but as soon as he mentioned it to the other writers they were so appalled that he relented. This was also at a time when they didn't know if there was going to be a second season, and Moore kind of wanted to end with a bang if they didn't get picked up. But really "DB was going to be God in the original draft", is exaggerating a bit because it wasn't even in any "draft", it was an idea he had. We could add more later, but I think now there's not much to say. I mean if you wanted to start a more generic article on Cylon Religion alright.--Ricimer 23:13, 29 April 2006 (UTC)
