[edit] Personal history

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Ricky came to Studio 60 in the late 90's with his writing partner Ron Oswald. Ricky's relationship with Matt Albie can be described as brittle. Matt has referred to the duo as "Beavis and Hackboy", implying their style of writing. Shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks occurred, Matt lent his support for Bill Maher after his controversial on-air remark. Ricky Tahoe later released a statement stating "Matt Albie certainly doesn't speak for the cast, crew and staff of Studio 60 whose thoughts and prayers are with the brave men and women who lost their lives on September 11th"., which Danny is aware of and understands Matt's antipathy toward them.

When their contract came up for renewal, it's discovered that the two have been writing a sitcom for FOX based on a character that they created for Studio 60, "Peripheral Vision Man" and threaten to take the entire writing staff with them except for two new writers.

Finally after a long period of arguing and heated words between Matt and Ricky, the two sides part ways.

[edit] Speculation on real world influence

There is a large amount of fan speculation, fostered by the similarity of name, that the character is intened to mock Rick Cleveland. This has not been confirmed by anyone involved with production of the show. Fans have speculated that Ron Oswald is based on Ron Osborn.
