[edit] Early life
He was born into a working class family. Both parents worked, mother for Boeing as a general laborer and father as a tool maker for Heath Technics, a supplier to Boeing. Young Rydell had three sisters, one died at age 3 and was Downs Syndrome. He spent his 2nd birthday with his father at the hospital who was recovering from cancer induced amputation of one of his legs.
At the beginning of second grade the family moved to Payette, Idaho for a new job. It lasted only 8 months. The family then moved to Billings, Montana where his father began a new career in radio.
At 16, school was no longer an option. He was told, by his parents, to find a job or move out. He did both. His baseball coach was the program director at KGHL the competing station to his fathers and offered Green the younger a job, with one condition. A change of his last name to avoid confusion with the elder's radio program. Rick Rydell was born.
[edit] Career
Having grown up in Billings, Montana, Rydell first gained notoriety in radio in Spokane, WA with following gigs in KXYQ and KMJK in Portland, Oregon, then a two-year stint in Cleveland at WNCX. Rydell was the anchor on morning show that launched Mike Trivisonno and Todd Brandt into radio fame.
Fired by PD Doug Podell in 1990 and went north to Anchorage. Was final building block for the highly successful 100.5 the FOX Classic Rock station. KBFX, then made the transition to Talk Radio in 2001. His program originates from 650 KENI in Anchorage and is simulcast in Fairbanks, Alaska on News Radio 970 KFBX.
Focused on local and state politics, and current events, his program shot up from 17th to #1 in six months where it has stayed near the top for over five years. Rydell is credited by some with putting talk radio on the map in Alaska. Rydell now broadcasts weekday mornings throughout Alaska on both 650 KENI in Anchorage and 970 KFBX in Fairbanks.
Rydell was named "Best Morning Show" by the Oregonian in 1988, Best comedy series for 1994, Best Radio Show 2005, Most Uniquely Alaskan Radio Show 2006 by the Alaska Broadcasters Assoc., and Alaska Republican Man of the Year for 2004 by the Alaska Republican Party.
