Richmond (cigarette)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richmond cigarettes (John Player) are a value brand of tobacco cigarettes introduced into UK markets circa 2000. They come in the usual varieties (King Size, Smooth, Superking (100mm)) and also a menthol variety. The brand primarily is in competition at the lower end of the market, against popular value UK cigarette brands such as Mayfair, Sovereign, Park Road et al. It is the second-best selling cigarette brand in the UK[citation needed], after Lambert and Butler, which, like Richmond, are produced by Imperial Tobacco. The majority of the consumers of Richmond cigarettes are low-budget; teenager smokers being a common example. Richmond's occupation of the lower price brackets means however, that it is associated with inferior quality. They are characterised by the bright blue packaging, which recently (July 2006) underwent a redesign: the serif font used being replaced for a more modern sans-serif, and general appearance becoming more minimalist.
