Richard David Hughes (born 8 September 1975, in Gravesend, Kent) is the drummer for the English piano rock band Keane.
Hughes attended Tonbridge School where he was friends with Tim Rice-Oxley and Dominic Scott. When Scott and Rice-Oxley formed a small covers band in 1995 he was invited to join as drummer. Although Hughes initially objected, they later invited Tom Chaplin to join the band.
Hughes then went off to university at University College London where he received a degree in Geography. He took a job as a secretary at the BBC in order to support himself and the band while they lived and practiced in a flat on Upper Clapton Road in London. He was also a teacher for a while.[citation needed]

[edit] Quotes
“ | ...Anyway, I'm the drummer in Keane, why would anyone give a shit? | ” |
- When asked about their personal lifes.
“ | To be fair to Tim, he had to work quite hard to persuade Dominic and I to let Tom join the band. I mean the idea of
giving someone who's already the noisiest person you know a microphone was not something that I was particularly keen on. |
” |
- When asked about Chaplin's addition to the band.
“ | Is that supposed to be on fire? | ” |
- While regarding the back tire of their tour bus
“ | What are you filming me for? | ” |
- While Ed Roe filming him on the tour bus, for Strangers.
