Ribeira Grande de Santiago (Portuguese for "Great River" which it flows nearby) is a city located in Cape Verde, detached from the municipality of Praia in 2005. It was founded in the 16th century. Later, the importance of the city later declined due to pirate raid. The city of Ribeira Grande de Santiago is one of the oldest cities founded by Europeans in Sub-Saharan Africa. Its port was served for caravels which transported slaves from Africa and for other parts of the world mainly Europe and the Americas. The city of Ribeira Grande de Santiago of Cape Verde has the largest importance in history of humanity. The city has protected numerous of significant buildings and ruins since the discovery of the Cape Verde Archipelago since 1460.
