[edit] Regrets

I understand that Jonjoe has been very disturbed by the penultimate line of my note of August 10, 17:31 on Jonjoe's talk page.

Firstly, I very much want you to seek a second opinion on this matter. You can do so by putting a message on the talk page of any Wikipedia user. Loganberry would seem an obvious choice since he was the first person to contribute to Jonjoe's talk page. Ask Loganberry to confirm that I have not communicated with him in any way to try and influence his opinion.

I deeply regret that Jonjoe has been disturbed in this way. I am very sad to hear that this has happened. But I must insist that it is an unfortunate accident.

Children are very welcome to contribute to Wikipedia. But it is primarily a site for adults and therefore children must not be surprised if other users treat them as adults. Jonjoe's user page gave no clue to his age nor his disabilities. I cannot therefore be blamed in the slightest for addressing Jonjoe as an adult. My contribution was meant to be constructive, and encouraging. The penultimate line was a friendly invitation to meet up. If you wish to judge the note, you must judge it on the basis that it was addressed to an adult.

Whilst I can see why Jonjoe might have misunderstood it, I am very sad that you also seem to have taken it the wrong way.

But the real tragedy is that he has kept this bottled up for a month. Why? What he has been doing on Wikipedia is something he can be very proud of. Ask him to take you through his contributions and you will see how much of what he has done has been accepted.

Once again, let me say how sorry I am that he has been disturbed in this way.

[edit] Reparations

He are some suggestions as to how you can help restore Jonjoe's confidence in Wikipedia.

  • Make sure that his user page at least tells us his age. How much more you want to say, I leave up to you.
  • Go through my note of August 10 with him paragraph by paragraph:
    • Encourage him to restore two (but not more than two!) photographs to the Poulton-le-Fylde railway station article
    • Explain to him that when someone asks a civil question, it is good practise to reply to it. Ie. take him to the public library and find out what the stations on the Preston and Wyre Joint Railway between Poulton and Fleetwood were actually called.
  • Stress to him that Wikipedia is hot on image copyrights and any pictures he uploads must have proper copyright tags or they are liable to be deleted.

[edit] Correction

The text which follows is a draft for posting to User talk:Jonjoe. Please amend it as you see fit. And advise me when you are ready for it to be posted.

Thereafter, I undertake not to contribute to User talk:Jonjoe without your approval. But of course I retain the same right as everbody else to amend edits done by Jonjoe in other parts of Wikipedia.

[edit] Railway stations, etc.

I have touched virtually everthing you did yesterday, so you deserve some words of explanation.

  • Why Do You Capitalise Every Word In A Sentence? Please stop it - it just makes work for other editors.
  • I can see absolutely no reason for four virtually identical pictures and one only slightly different in Poulton-le-Fylde railway station. Wikipedia is not an image gallery. Two pictures in the article is fine.
  • The same goes for two very similar pictures in Level crossing but I will let you or someone else decide - but learn to spell near.
  • You have forgotten Squires Gate railway station - remember: lower case 'r' and 's'!
  • Fleetwood branch. My view on closed railway stations is that you deal with them in an article about the line and just redirect from individual station names. For example Spencer Road railway halt. I am very dubious about all four of the station names you have given for the Fleetwood branch - I have seen references to "Burn Naze halt" and "Thornton for Cleveleys railway station". What evidence have you for the names you used? (Yes, I do know that stations tend to have been given different names at different times.) I suggest in the first instance that you expand Preston and Wyre Joint Railway before creating articles for the individual stations. (A session in the local library might be worthwhile.)
  • Uploading images is a pain. Taken by me is unfortunately not enough - you have to add a proper tag - use one of those in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Public domain dedications.
  • Image:P3080307.jpg is prima facie a copyright violation - but I am not sure what tag it should have! I have just emailed the webmaster on transportimages complaining about the absence of copyright info on the site.
  • These two images, from Cleveleys and Thornton, Lancashire are both copyvios. If you feel like submitting your own substitutes, that would be welcomed.
  • Don't email me your address or I will come and see you next time I visit my mother in law in Ansdell! My mother in law lives in Ansdell. If you would like to email me your address, I could pop in and see you next time I visit her. If you do not want to give me your address, that is perfectly OK.

I hope I have not put you off too much - keep contributing! -- RHaworth 17:31:46, 2005-08-10 (UTC) updated +++++

I am really sad that you misunderstood the above. Please, please believe me - it was meant to be friendly and helpful. -- ++++

[edit] Copyright violations

Let me repeat my remarks about the need for proper copyright information on any images that you upload. You have admitted that Image:Ansdell&FairhavenRailwayStation.jpg is "from the BBC" so it is probably a copyright violation. Why don't you go out and take your own photo? -- ++++
